  • Structural/pipe welder with structural & pipe welding certification dated within the last 2 years.
  • At least 2 years of construction industry experience on overseas projects.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints and job specifications.
  • Basic understanding of construction principles and procedures.
  • High‑school diploma or equivalent.
  • Thorough knowledge of the safe and effective use of hand tools and power tools.
  • Flexibility to work overseas.
  • Understanding and adherence to local laws and customs in host country.
  • Compliance with all government site security requirements.
  • Ability to take direction and work well with others, including third‑country nationals (TCNs).

Responsibilities

  • Comply with AWS D1.1 and AWS D1.3 codes.
  • Cut, fabricate and install FEBR & structural steel read from blueprints.
  • Cut, weld and install steel tubes and sheets.
  • Maintain clean work areas and material staging.
  • Adhere to safety requirements and safety-first mindset.
  • Produce as-built drawings for field changes.
  • Finish joints per NOMMA Guidelines 1.
  • Assist with other duties within skill set as needed.

Job Title: CAW Welder/Pipe Fitter

Job Location: Durban, South Africa

American International Contractors (Special Projects), Inc. (AICI-SP) has established itself as one of the leading construction firms in the Department of State, Overseas Building Operations (OBO) program. We continue to win important contracts and projects throughout this program and others. This position must possess an active SECRET clearance, a valid passport, and the ability to obtain appropriate work visas and other required documentation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Comply with applicable provisions of AWS D1.1 “Structural Welding Code – Steel,” and AWS D1.3 “Structural Welding Code – Sheet Steel.”
  • Cut, fabricate and install FEBR & structural steel (read and understand blueprints).
  • Cut, weld and install steel tubes and sheets.
  • Keep work area and material staging areas clean and orderly.
  • Adhere to safety requirements and think safety first.
  • Generate as-built drawings for changed field conditions.
  • Finish joints in accordance with National Ornamental & Miscellaneous Metals (NOMMA) Guideline 1.
  • Assist with other assigned duties as required within skill set, even if outside of trade.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Employee is regularly required to use hands to grasp and reach up with arms overhead, perform manual dexterity tasks, and handle objects weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally more without assistance. The job requires stooping, squatting, standing, walking, twisting, balancing, climbing ladders and stairs of high‑rise buildings, kneeling, crouching, speaking, carrying, and hearing. Workplace includes elevated platforms, scaffolds, and potentially man lifts. Minimum personal protective equipment includes hard hat, safety glasses, and steel‑toed safety shoes.

MENTAL DEMANDS

High degree of concentration, rapid decision making, sound judgment, and ability to follow directions and meet deadlines in a busy and potentially dangerous environment.

ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS

Work on a busy construction site overseas, sometimes far from family. Exposure to extreme weather (hot, cold, humid, wet), construction equipment, sharp tools, power tools, chemicals, electric shock, heights, noise, dust, fumes, smoke, and airborne particles. Flexibility with a 60‑hour workweek, 6 days a week; 10 hours per day.
