Job Purpose
The Cargo Controller is responsible for managing cargo operations at Cape Town Terminals, focusing on vessel and gate activities.
This includes ensuring smooth cargo handling, scheduling, tracking, and coordination among stakeholders like shipping lines, port authorities, truckers, and internal teams.
The role aims to optimize terminal operations while ensuring safety, compliance, and efficiency.
Responsibilities
Vessel Operations Management
Coordinate vessel cargo operations, including loading, unloading, and securing cargo.
Prepare cargo manifests and documentation for vessels.
Monitor vessel schedules and collaborate with shipping lines to meet timelines.
Coordinate with terminal operations for vessel turnarounds and berth allocations.
Ensure Terminal Operating System (TOS) is updated for smooth operations.
Gate Operations Management
Oversee inbound and outbound gate activities, ensuring efficient processing of trucks and cargo.
Supervise container and cargo movements through gates.
Monitor gate traffic, manage delays, and optimize vehicle flow.
Ensure safety and security compliance at gates and yard.
Monitor real-time cargo movement within the terminal.
Maintain cargo records and monitor container / vessel statuses.
Provide regular operational reports and updates.
Collaborate with operations, customer service, and logistics teams.
Maintain stock level reports within the terminal.
Safety & Compliance
Ensure all cargo activities comply with safety standards and regulations.
Monitor PPE use and safe work practices.
Ensure compliance with customs and port authority regulations.
Report incidents and assist investigations.
Stakeholder Coordination & Communication
Serve as the main contact for terminal operations, shipping lines, truckers, and port authorities.
Coordinate with customs, transport, and warehouse teams for cargo clearance and movement.
Manage stakeholder expectations and resolve operational issues professionally.
Process Improvement & Efficiency
Identify opportunities for operational improvements and delay reduction.
Suggest process enhancements to increase throughput and reduce costs.
