Main Purpose of the Position:

To lead, guide, and provide editorial direction to a production team to deliver in-depth coverage of current issues on-air by investigating and exploring angles of news stories, developments, and trends for Television News.

Key Accountabilities:
  1. Lead effective, efficient, and creative brainstorming sessions for news programming and content selection aligned with SABC News editorial objectives and public mandate.
  2. Compile story lists and running orders, and determine questions and answers for designated news programmes.
  3. Correct linguistic and factual errors.
  4. Attend daily national diary line-talk meetings with or at the request of the line manager.
  5. Determine and assign stories, providing ongoing direction to the production team.
  6. Ensure all stories meet high editorial and language standards.
  7. Follow up on story progress until delivery for on-air production and broadcast.
  8. Research, analyze, and understand the subtexts and nuances in news stories to assess their importance, relevance, and impact.
  9. Identify different angles for each story for broadcast.
  10. Plan shows ahead of time.
  11. Write, translate, voice, package, and edit stories and features as per platform requirements.
  12. Brief presenters on story angles.
  13. Verify audiovisual material and scripts for accuracy, balance, and fairness.
  14. Brief technical producers/directors on the programme running order and collaborate on preparations for broadcasts.
  15. Write and produce teasers and programme trailers, and prepare scripts and line-ups.
  16. Engage and coordinate social media content to enhance programmes.
  17. Assign on-air tasks to producers, including social media and breaking stories.
  18. Review programmes for continuous improvement.
  19. Alert editors about live interviews and breaking news.
  20. Follow up on stories, leads, and tip-offs before, during, and after broadcasts.
  21. Engage in daily story briefings and debriefings for upcoming news events.
  22. Promote professional relations and contribute to compliance and listener complaint reports.
  23. Prepare daily production reports for the editor.
  24. Ensure content adherence to SABC Editorial Policies, BCCSA, Press Codes, and broadcast regulations.
  25. Comply with the broadcasting act and related legislative requirements.
  26. Follow all policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
Requirements:
  • National Diploma / Degree in Journalism or Media Studies or equivalent qualification. NQF6/7
  • 6 years’ proven experience in news writing and production of current affairs programmes.
  • Advanced understanding of broadcasting regulations, SABC policies, BCCSA, and Press Codes.
  • Proficiency and exceptional writing skills in isiZulu.
  • Understanding of regulations impacting broadcasting.
  • Knowledge of current social, economic, and political trends.
  • Understanding of multi-media platform productions.
  • Strong news sense and editorial judgment.
  • Interest in radio broadcast developments and trends.
