Main purpose of the position: To produce and deliver compelling, high-quality television news content in line with SABC News's public mandate objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Compile a list and running order of stories, interviews, and determine questions and answers for designated news programmes.
  2. Attend daily national diary line-talk meetings with or at the request of the line manager.
  3. Determine and assign stories, providing direction to the production team.
  4. Ensure all stories adhere to the highest quality editorial and language standards.
  5. Follow up on the progress of stories until delivery for on-air production and broadcast.
  6. Research, analyze, and understand the undercurrents, subtexts, and nuances in news stories, developments, and trends to assess their importance and relevance.
  7. Identify different news angles for each story to pursue for broadcast.
  8. Plan shows adequately ahead of time.
  9. Write, translate, voice, package, and edit stories and features according to platform requirements.
  10. Brief presenters on different story angles to pursue.
  11. Verify audiovisual material and scripts for factual accuracy, balance, and fairness.
  12. Brief technical producers/directors on the programme running order and collaborate on preparation for broadcasts.
  13. Create strong teasers and programme trails with memorable soundbites.
  14. Prepare scripts and line-up according to the programme structure.
  15. Coordinate and check social media activity and content to enhance the programme.
  16. Perform and assign on-air tasks to producers, including social media, follow-ups, and breaking stories.
  17. Review programmes continuously for improvements.
  18. Alert relevant editors about live interviews and breaking news.
  19. Follow-up and respond to stories, leads, and tip-offs before, during, and after broadcasts.
  20. Engage in daily and pre-emptive story briefings and debriefings.
  21. Promote professional and interpersonal relations to maintain a productive environment.
  22. Contribute to compliance reports and listener complaints within deadlines.
  23. Write daily production reports for submission to the editor.
  24. Ensure all content adheres to SABC Editorial Policies, BCCSA, Press Codes, and broadcast regulations.
  25. Comply with broadcasting acts, policies, SOPs, and legislative requirements.

Requirements:

  • National Diploma/Degree in Journalism, Media Studies, or equivalent qualification.
  • NQF Level 6 / 7 with 6-8 years' proven experience in news and current affairs production.
  • Advanced understanding of broadcasting regulations, legislation, and SABC policies.
  • Mother-tongue proficiency and exceptional writing skills in the designated language.
  • Understanding of current social, economic, and political trends.
  • Knowledge of multi-media platform productions.
  • Strong news sense and editorial judgment.
  • Interest in radio broadcast developments and trends.
