Capital Projects Lead - Africa and Middle East

Position Description

The Barrick Africa & Middle East Team is seeking to recruit a Capital Projects Lead - AME to join and grow our team. Reporting to the Head of Capital Projects – AME, this role will be responsible for defining and evaluating project studies, as well as motivating and executing growth and sustaining projects to achieve and exceed the AME 5-year capital portfolio and life of mine plans.

Responsibilities :

  1. Entrench the actions from the Journey to Zero roadmap in AME and lead by example.
  2. Promote and encourage adherence to the Health, Safety and Environmental policies, standards, procedures, and local regulations.
  3. Provide technical steer into the scope and budgeting, design, engineering, construction, and commissioning of capital projects.
  4. Review and motivate the AME operations 5-year and LOM capital expenditure portfolio.
  5. Provide assurance of good capital accounting practices and perform accurate cashflow forecasting.
  6. Perform technical evaluation of tenders and sign off on reward recommendations using the TEAR process.
  7. Track the Monthly, Quarterly and Full Year progress and cost performance of the portfolio.
  8. Work with Operations Managers to identify and review capital requirements for key services (water, power) and fixed infrastructure to support LOM.
  9. Work with Operations Managers to identify and review capital requirements for HME and UG Fleet replacement to support the LOM.
  10. Actively manage the AME TSF facilities capital program together with TSF Lead Engineer from a risk mitigation, construction, deposition timing, and rehabilitation point of view for LOM.
  11. Instil disciplined project management principles in AME operational capital teams.
  12. Build resilient capital projects teams of young capable local individuals to support responsible execution of the AME site capital portfolio.
  13. Ensure the requisite capital project management roles are in place in the owner’s teams of growth and major capital projects.
  14. Form the key point of contact in evaluations and growth capital project studies from PEA, PFS, FS through to detailed engineering.
  15. Maximize local economic participation in capital projects and contracted services without compromise on performance or quality.
  16. Qualification Requirements :

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical / Electrical / Civil / Mining Engineering.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.

Experience and Skills Requirements :

  • At least 10 years’ experience in the mining industry with a focus on capital project execution.
  • 5 years project management experience.
  • Previous experience managing large capital projects.
  • Computer Skills – must have strong computer skills and proficient in Microsoft Office software (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Projects, and Outlook).
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
