Job description

African Parks is developing an innovative solution that enables decision-making based on data from its ecological, social, financial, and management systems, visualized in a single environment. We are offering an exciting opportunity for a data engineer passionate about conservation to build the foundation of African Parks' data warehouse in Microsoft Fabric & Azure. You will expand the existing infrastructure by ensuring data from key systems flows through effective ETL pipelines, enabling decision-driving dashboards and data products built by your team of data analysts.

You will work within the Business Intelligence Unit of African Parks as the technical lead on data warehousing and its associated ETL pipelines. Your colleagues will rely on you to make the data available for building impact dashboards and other data products that inform important decisions. You will act as a bridge between the BI Unit's needs, system administrators, and the technology department, ensuring smooth and well-documented processes in collaboration with the enterprise architect. The ideal candidate combines technical expertise with an interest in data-driven conservation decision-making and skills in stakeholder engagement and documentation.

Responsibilities

  1. Configure, expand, and maintain the data architecture on Microsoft Fabric & Azure Data Lakes & Warehousing, ensuring adherence to data governance, security, and integrity best practices.
  2. Design data pipelines for all key data systems. Build end-to-end ETL pipelines connecting to African Parks' key data systems via APIs set up with the enterprise architect. Key systems include EarthRanger, ESRI (Survey123), ERPNext, SAGE, Jet Analytics, Salesforce, ResRequest, TallOrder, and SharePoint.
  3. Perform data transformations, cleaning, validation, and modeling to enable dashboards. Develop and optimize models, including retrieval and storage processes, to prepare data for exposure in Microsoft PowerBI and/or ArcGIS by data analysts.
  4. Collaborate and engage stakeholders. Liaise with data and GIS analysts and system owners to translate requirements from the enterprise architect into technical solutions. Collaborate with the enterprise architect to define data rules, governance frameworks, and roadmaps.
