Job description

Breaking News Correspondent, Sub-Saharan Africa - Reuters is looking for a journalist with strong news judgment and a passion for speed and accuracy to join our Breaking News team in Sub-Saharan Africa. Based in Johannesburg, the successful candidate will be part of a high-performing team, covering breaking news across various topics, from sending headlines and news breaks in real time to writing updates, quick sidebars, and compelling, visually-led human interest stories. The correspondent will be on the front lines of the most important, competitive, and exciting stories emerging from South Africa.

About the Role
  1. Monitor a range of sources for key economic, corporate, and general news developments.
  2. Use social media to identify and report stories on news, trends, and viral moments across Sub-Saharan Africa.
  3. Write fast and accurate headlines and stories under time pressure, covering various topics.
  4. Collaborate with colleagues across the continent and across multiple areas of coverage.
  5. Write spot news stories and short multimedia features across the region.
About You
  1. Have strong news judgment and the ability to filter complex information quickly.
  2. Understand how global markets work and be familiar with the region's oil sector, financial markets, and political affairs.
  3. Be fluent in English with strong English writing skills.
  4. Knowledge of French or Portuguese is a plus.
  5. Be a fast learner and a team player.
  6. Have strong communication skills and work calmly under pressure.
  7. Have at least three years of experience working in a news organization.
