Job description

CORE PURPOSE OF JOB

The purpose of this post is to manage and render information and research support and training services, to oversee an effective circulation service and to oversee care and maintenance of the library building at Nelson Mandela University, George Campus Library, for the smooth operation of the Branch Library.


KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

  • Assists and supports the Deputy Director in planning the Academic and Research Support Services, including the Circulation Department and the Information and Services and Training Department.
  • Manages and administers the operations of the service sections.
  • Manages the maintenance of library facility and equipment.
  • Manages and develops human resources in the Circulation and Information Services Sections.
  • Supervises the maintenance of library facility and equipment.
  • Advises on and participates in LIS collection development.
  • Advises on and participates in Campus Management operations.
  • Delivers customer care, bibliographic, information and training services to patrons.
  • Supervises the circulation requirements of all library users.

CORE COMPETENCIES

  • Knowledge and understanding of the Library Integrated management system.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the management of Higher Education/Academic/Research Libraries.
  • Knowledge of Circulation routines and workflows.
  • Knowledge of information services technology, including the ability to use the Internet and electronic reference resources.
  • Knowledge of Research tools.
  • Networking experience and Project management skills.
  • Possess an in-depth knowledge of institutional, LIS and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Excellent teaching and presentation skills to comfortably present information clearly and engagingly.
  • Thorough knowledge of the structure, organisation, management, dissemination and use of print and online information sources.
  • Advanced Search Skills to effectively search catalogues, databases and Internet sources.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Knowledge of budgeting requirements and procedures.
  • Strong human resource and conflict management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer-focused skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.

Requirements

In order to be considered for appointment to this post, candidates must possess:

Required Minimum Education: M + 4 appropriate qualification in Library and Information Sciences.

Required Minimum Experience: 5 years related professional experience, preferably in an academic library.
