POSITION: Underground Boilermaker

JOB GRADING: C-Lower

DEPARTMENT: Engineering - Infrastructure

SITE: South Deep Gold Mine

The Underground Boilermaker is accountable for the safe execution of assigned maintenance, repair, construction, and fabrication on underground and surface shaft infrastructure, ground handling systems and conveyances and winders. The incumbent is required to execute all assigned tasks in accordance with defined operational safety standards and procedures to ensure the optimised availability of engineering equipment.

Minimum Requirements:

Grade 12 or equivalent

Recognized Boilermaker Trade Certificate

A minimum of 2 years’ experience as a shaft maintenance or construction boilermaker

Proven proficiency in pipe and general underground fabrication and construction

Proven proficiency to read, interpret and execute work off engineering drawings

Be declared medically fit for the position and environment, as determined by a risk-based medical examination at the Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre and pass a Heat Tolerance Screening test, and such other tests as may be required to assess the applicant’s suitability for employment

Proven track record in personal safety leadership

Proven interpersonal, collaborative and communication skills

Independent, proactive thinker and ability to schedule and deliver work within tight deadlines

Advanced knowledge of specialized boilermaking/plating tools

Proficient in basic slinging and rigging

Duties and Responsibilities:

Ensure health and safety of self and team members by applying relevant standards and procedures in the planning, risk assessment and execution of maintenance activities

Perform inspections in accordance with the Mine Health and Safety Act regulations, and Company standards

Contribute to a culture of zero harm by adhering to all requirements as laid down by legislation, health, safety, environmental, security policies, and procedures, and by the application of specific instructions to own work area and task completion

Promote and develop team work as an effective team leader

Ensuring that task planning and execution is aligned to Planned Maintenance and condition monitoring standards and, that task completion is conducted timeously and effectively

Ensure the safe and timely execution of daily maintenance on boxes, steel works, 18 ton hoppers, locos, etc.

Safely execute breakdown repairs as assigned and assists with expansion and construction tasks

Participate in and conduct scheduled and ad hoc shaft and infrastructure examinations and repairs
