Requirements :
  • Grade 10 and an equivalent recognized National Steam Certificate.
  • A minimum of 1-3 years’ appropriate experience gained in operating boilers.
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act of 1993 and Regulations.
  • Planning, organizing, communication (verbal and written) skills are essential.
Duties :
  • Makes requisition of chemicals from stores as required.
  • Tests the quality of water of softeners as well as the returning flows of condensate water.
  • Fills chemicals tank with required chemicals as prescribed.
  • Top up salt in brine tank.
  • Checks working conditions of chemical pumps.
  • Tests total dissolve solids (TDS) and blow-down according to prescripts.
  • Monitors the stream pressure constantly and checks the correct temperature of hot well tanks.
  • Adjusts the stocker for efficient steam delivery.
  • Reports all defects timeously.
  • Checks the feed water pump levels and hot well tanks for sufficient water supply to the boiler.
  • Ensures standby boilers and funnels are always full of water and chemicals.
  • Controls the flow of fuel.
  • Maintains a safe boiler environment, including proper use of protective clothing.
  • Cleans the brine tank and water filter as prescribed.
  • Removes ash from boilers, grit arrestors, and smoke boxes.
  • Logs all recordings as per the assessment in the logbook.
  • Performs supervisory functions.
  • Receives and signs off on the delivery of coal.
  • Provides shift reports.
  • Maintains shift/overtime register.
  • Performs other related duties delegated by the Supervisor.
