Job summary

African Health Research Institute (AHRI) in Durban invites applications for a Bioinformatics Research Intern in the Basic & Translational Science Department. You will assist with organizing datasets, running pipelines, and performing initial analyses across multi-omics projects.

Collaborate with senior researchers to interpret results, visualize data, and contribute to infectious disease and immunology research in a learning environment.

Qualifications

• Honours degree in Bioinformatics, Microbiology, Computer Science or related field required.
• Basic knowledge of transcriptomics, proteomics or metabolomics data analysis.
• Proficient in R or Python; comfortable with Linux command line.
• Familiar with FASTQ, GTF and CSV data formats and public bioinformatics databases.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and organize biological datasets (genomics/transcriptomics/proteomics).
• Run and monitor bioinformatics pipelines under supervision.
• Perform basic data analyses including differential expression and PCA.
• Generate visual summaries (heatmaps, volcano plots) and figures.
• Collaborate with researchers and prepare reports and presentations.

This internship offers hands-on experience supporting ongoing bioinformatics analyses, workflow development, and data management across multi-omics research projects. The role provides an opportunity to learn how to process, curate, and analyze complex biological datasets (e.g., sequencing, proteomics, and clinical data) while developing practical skills in bioinformatics and reproducible research.
