Job summary

Alistair James Company Ltd in Durban is seeking a skilled vehicle mechanic to service a growing fleet across the region. You will diagnose faults and perform repairs on heavy trucks, 24-volt systems and associated equipment, while following safety protocols and maintaining detailed records.

The role requires flexibility to work irregular hours, including weekends, and good teamwork to ensure quick roadside responses and smooth workshop operations.

Qualifications

• Matric or Technical College equivalent is required.
• Valid driver licence is required.
• Experience with heavy trucks and 24V systems is essential.
• Familiarity with Howo Sinotruk 371 or similar Chinese brands is preferred.
• Strong diagnostic, problem-solving and analytical skills are expected.
• Able to manage time effectively and work under pressure.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose and troubleshoot issues by consulting with drivers to understand reported problems.
• Perform repairs and component replacement on engines, transmissions, brake systems, steering, axles and hydraulics.
• Conduct routine electrical inspections to keep vehicles in peak condition.
• Complete safety and compliance checks for regulatory standards.
• Maintain accurate records of work, parts used and time spent using fleet maintenance systems.
• Communicate clearly with managers and colleagues to explain problems and recommendations.
• Adhere to safety standards and maintain a clean, organized workspace.

Accountabilities & Responsibility Areas

• Diagnose and troubleshoot issues: Consult with drivers to understand reported problems. Perform diagnostic check to identify faults.
• Perform repairs and component replacement: Fix or replace malfunctioning electrical parts, on following systems engines, transmissions, brake systems, steering mechanisms, axles, and hydraulic.
• Conduct routine electrical inspections, to keep vehicles running in peak condition.
• Complete safety and compliance checks: Inspect vehicles to ensure they meet regulations.
• Maintain accurate records: Document all work performed, including parts used, time spent on repairs, and details of inspections. Use computerized fleet maintenance systems to track and log information.
• Work with colleagues: Communicate clearly with managers and supervisors to explain vehicle problems and repair recommendations. Collaborate with other mechanics and the parts department to ensure a smooth workflow.
• Adhere to safety standards: Follow all safety protocols, including proper handling. Maintain a clean and organized work area.

Skills and Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

• Matric or Technical College equivalent
• Valid driver licence
• Skilled on Howo Sinotruk 371, Foton Auman 430 AMT or similar Chinese brands
• Skilled on heavy truck and trailer systems 24 volt
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
• Time orientated and punctual , manage time effectively under pressure.
• Willingness to work irregular hours, including weekends and holidays, as needed
• Attention to detail and a commitment to quality workmanship
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Respond promptly to roadside breakdown calls and provide on-site mechanical assistance
