Job description

Job Location : Gauteng, Johannesburg Deadline : July 19, 2025

Responsibilities:

  1. Set up and manage fader strips, hybrids test unit, gain structures, and auxiliary channels on the mixing console.
  2. Perform lineup sync tests with JHB / CPT engineers (colour bars tone, clapper board test, lip sync, test signal generator).
  3. Collaborate and/or substitute as an Audio Assistant as required.
  4. Operate the audio console during live and pre-recorded news bulletins.
  5. Balance levels between microphones, music beds, effects, and external sources.
  6. Follow TD’s instructions and coordinate audio with vision mixer cues.
  7. Follow auto cue / teleprompter cues.
  8. Mix audio to meet international standards, aiming for 0db where possible.
  9. Continuously monitor program output levels to prevent distortion or dead air.
  10. Ensure 100% audio readiness before going on-air.

On-Location / Outside Broadcasts (OB):

  1. Record synchronized sound using field mixers.
  2. Conduct comprehensive gear checks before each shoot, including transmitters, receivers, batteries, and cabling.
  3. Set up and label microphones, pair frequencies, and verify channel routing.
  4. Collaborate with camera operators for sync tests.
  5. Mic up talent, set EQ levels, and monitor battery life.
  6. Ensure correct aux channels are opened for hybrids / Telos units.
  7. Set up and test remote feeds and communication systems.
  8. Conduct lip sync and clapperboard tests with engineers at other locations (e.g., JHB / CPT).
  9. Monitor and adjust the mix live during OBs to ensure clarity and consistency.

Audio Signal Management:

  1. Monitor all active audio channels and hybrid feeds.
  2. Adjust package and hybrid levels dynamically based on editorial changes.
  3. Set up EQs for on-air talent.
  4. Use aux pre-fade to test hybrid lines before guests are on-air.
  5. Ensure all changes align with the vision of the director and editorial team.

Equipment Management and Maintenance:

  1. Maintain all studio and field audio equipment in proper working order.
  2. Report faults immediately to the Head of Audio.
  3. Keep backups and spare batteries on hand.
  4. Log all technical issues for resolution and reporting.

Compliance and Safety:

  1. Maintain audio equipment and report faults or servicing needs.
  2. Ensure compliance with broadcast standards and copyright laws.
  3. Participate in periodic compliance training as required.

Stakeholder Relationships and Reporting:

  1. Collaborate with Technical Directors and Executive Producers to meet production requirements.
  2. Engage actively in discussions, ensuring collaboration across teams.
  3. Build relationships, develop sources, and collaborate with media teams.
  4. Write detailed reports on technical issues for management.
