Direct Reporting Line: Senior Attorney: Director of Law Clinic

The IIE's Varsity College, Durban North Law Clinic has a vacancy for an Attorney.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate, teach, and supervise the training of candidate legal practitioners.
  • Assist with the daily operations of the Law Clinic.
  • Oversee community advice desks and legal education outreach programs.
  • Supervise LLB students and candidate legal practitioners on the experiential Law module XBLAW8419.
  • Engage in advocacy and promote legal awareness within the community.
  • Expand the clinic’s regional presence in Durban.
  • Manage staff development and performance reviews.
  • Assist with high-impact litigation at the High Court as the clinic grows.
  • Contribute to the clinic’s strategic planning aligned with organizational goals.
  • Supervise candidate legal practitioners ensuring high-quality legal services.
  • Build relationships with community organizations and stakeholders.
  • Support funding efforts through grants and donations.
  • Ensure compliance with LPC and SAULCA registration requirements.
  • Prepare reports for funders, stakeholders, and academic bodies.
  • Manage the clinic’s budget and financial planning.
  • Represent the clinic in public forums and professional associations.
  • Maintain confidential client records and clinic operations.
  • Participate in seminars and conferences for networking and presentation purposes.
Legal Drafting:
  • Manage cases from consultation to resolution or referral.
  • Provide legal advice and draft pleadings, agreements, and opinions.
  • Conduct legal research and due diligence investigations.
  • Maintain client confidentiality and relationships.
  • Handle litigation in civil courts, tribunals, and arbitrations.
  • Update stakeholders and manage case loads effectively.
  • Coordinate with candidate attorneys for case management and filings.
  • Assist with client billing information for legal secretaries.
  • Participate in witness interviews and legal proceedings.
Legal Advice:
  • Deliver legal services adhering to professional standards.
  • Prepare cases for trial or alternative dispute resolution.
  • Interpret relevant laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Analyze legal outcomes based on precedents.
Minimum Qualification Requirements:
  • Bachelor of Laws Degree (LLB); an LLM is advantageous.
Minimum Work Experience Requirements:
  • At least 2 years of post-article litigation experience.
Special Requirements:
  • Driver’s license and own vehicle.
  • Willingness to travel locally.
