Walter Sisulu University is a multi-campus, comprehensive University, with its seat at its Nelson Mandela Drive campus in Mthatha. The University has four campuses in Mthatha, Butterworth, Buffalo City and Queenstown. Applications are hereby invited for the following position based in Mthatha Campus.

FACULTY OF MEDICINE AND HEALTH SCIENCESDEPARTMENT OF NURSING SCIENCESASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OR PROFESSOR: NURSING (P6/5) PERMANENT REF NO: WSU MTHFMHS-EXT 2025/6 Key Performance Areas

  • Promoting academic excellence in teaching and research
  • Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students
  • Overall Departmental Strategy development and execution
  • Undertake research and supervise postgraduate research projects.
  • Mentor junior academics and emerging researchers in CE projects and/or proof of mentor them in research and/or teaching duties.
  • Initiate and oversee community engagement projects, partnerships, and collaboration and initiate short learning programs.
  • Publish results of Community Engagement projects
  • Lead and manage Curriculum/ programme development and quality assurance in the discipline and the department, faculty and institutionally.
  • Serve as external moderator and examiner of Master and Doctoral research projects nationally and internationally.
  • Supervision or co-supervision of higher degree students i.e. master's and PhD students

  • Proficiency in using the computer, Microsoft office and other relevant software packages.

Minimum Requirements

Associate Professor Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Nursing or Health Sciences
  • Masters in Nursing
  • Registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) in Nursing Education
  • Registration with SANC as nurse specialist (SANC regulated specialty programmes)
  • An NQF level 8 qualification in Nursing Administration/Health Services Management will be an added advantage.

Experience:

  • Minimum 8 years of lecturing experience in a university (tertiary level) in the field of Nursing with proven experience at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels
  • A minimum of six (6) research output units obtained in the previous five (5) years in DHET-accredited journals.
  • NRF C rating will be a strong advantage or
  • Evidence of sustained publication record and ability to apply for NRF rating within the next cycle of applications.
  • Evidence of successfully completed Masters research supervision
  • Evidence of successfully completed doctoral supervision will be added advantage.
  • Evidence of community engagement initiatives at local and regional levels.
  • Proven track record of securing research grants to support academic and research initiatives.
  • Evidence of curriculum development involvement.
  • Evidence of academic leadership roles previously held.

Experience:

Professor Requirements:

  • Minimum of 10 years lecturing experience in a university (tertiary level) in the field of Nursing.
  • A minimum of seven (7) research output units obtained in the previous five (5) years in DHET-accredited journals.
  • Proof of successfully completed Doctoral research supervision.
  • NRF C rating.
  • Evidence of community engagement initiatives at local and regional levels.
  • Evidence of research grant funding for academic projects.
  • Evidence of curriculum development involvement.
  • Evidence of academic leadership roles previously held.
