Job summary

North-West University invites applications for an Associate Professor in the School of Economic Sciences. The appointee will contribute to teaching, develop professional activities, and advance the statistics discipline within the university and broader community.

The role requires a PhD in Statistics, a minimum of eight years of tertiary teaching experience, and a strong record of postgraduate supervision and research publications. It is a permanent appointment in the NWU North West region.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Statistics (NQF level 10) is required.
  • Minimum of 8 years of lecturing experience at a tertiary institution.
  • At least five (5) research publications in accredited journals.
  • Supervision of at least three masters and a PhD student to completion.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching and Learning: conduct tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, field excursions and studio sessions; develop subject material.
  • Development and Supervision: deliver lectures, supervise honours and postgraduate study programs.
  • Research and Innovation: supervise major research projects; conduct research; engage in professional activity.
  • Development of Course materials: create course materials; mark/assess; consult with students.

POSITION: ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR

EMPLOYMENT TYPE: PERMANENT APPOINTMENT
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

Associate Professor is expected to make contributions to the teaching effort of the institution, and to carry out activities to maintain and develop his/her professional activities relevant to the profession or discipline.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • A PhD (NQF level 10) in Statistics.
  • A minimum of 8 years’ lecturing experience at a tertiary institution.
  • At least five (5) research publications in accredited journals.
  • Supervision of at least three (3) master’s and a PhD student to completion.
RECOMMENDATIONS / ADDED ADVANTAGES:
  • Must be a member of professional societies related to Statistics.
  • Conference proceedings.
JOB DESCRIPTION
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teaching and Learning:
  • The conduct of tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, student field excursions, clinical sessions and studio sessions.
  • Initiation and development of subject material.
Development and Supervision:
  • The preparation and delivery of lectures and seminars.
  • Supervision of the program of study of honours students or of postgraduate students engaged in course work.
  • Teaching activities include initiation and development of unit materials and may include the supervision of honours and research students.
Research and Innovation:
  • Supervision of major honours or postgraduate research projects.
  • The conduct of research.
  • Involvement in professional activity.
Development of Course materials:
  • Development of course material with appropriate advice from and support of more senior employees.
  • Marking and assessment.
  • Consultation with students.
KEY FUNCTIONAL / TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
  • Knowledge of Statistics.
  • Computer literacy in MS Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), email, and internet.
  • Knowledge of Statistical Softwares (SPSS, R-Studio, Python and Stata).
  • Knowledge of the appropriate assessment theory and practice to enhance student performance.
  • A proven commitment to teaching and learning, including a willingness to become involved in student's educational development and wellbeing.
  • Knowledge of modern platforms (e.g. whiteboard technology, eFundi, etc.) to enhance the ongoing changing of the learning and collaboration environment.
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
  • Good interpersonal relations and a client-service orientation.
  • Demonstration of language proficiency to function optimally in the various functionally multilingual environments of the NWU.
REMUNERATION:

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
