The Faculty of Arts and Humanities offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate learning and research programmes with wide-ranging, diverse and interdisciplinary approaches. The Department of Sociology is one of the largest departments in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities as students enjoy the engaging topics and critical debates on contemporary social issues which characterises our programmes across the undergraduate and postgraduate levels of study. These programmes are designed to encourage students to develop their sociological imagination and apply social research methodological approaches towards understanding and addressing various social issues locally and further afield. Teaching in the Department of Sociology is informed by research as the academics are recognised experts in their respective fields of research and scholarship.

The Department is expanding its academic and research programmes and seeks to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced candidate to serve in the position of an Associate Lecturer. Candidates with quantitative research methodology skills and knowledge are especially encouraged to apply for this position.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following key performance areas:

  • Facilitate learning and teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate (honours) levels.
  • Teach quantitative research methodology.
  • Participate in research and related scholarly activities.
  • Assist with undergraduate and postgraduate research supervision.
  • Participate in curriculum development and assessment activities.
  • Participate in academic administration and serve on committees.
  • Participate in community engagement and outreach initiatives.

Minimum Requirements

  • Honours degree in Sociology and confirmed registration for a Master’s degree in Sociology
  • Some experience (at least one year) in facilitating teaching and learning as a tutor or teaching assistant/graduate learning assistant in Sociology in a higher education institution.
  • Skill and experience in quantitative research methodology.

Recommendations/Added Advantages

  • Registered for a PhD in Sociology with satisfactory progress towards completion.
  • At least one scholarly publication or evidence of a completed manuscript.
  • At least one local academic conference participation.
