Assistant Sommelier

Are you passionate about fine wine and world-class hospitality? A prestigious luxury wine estate in Stellenbosch seeks a knowledgeable and enthusiastic Assistant Sommelier to enhance our exceptional dining experience. This role offers the opportunity to work with an award-winning wine collection, assist guests with expert pairings, and support the Head Sommelier in curating an unforgettable wine journey.

RESPONSIBILITIES :

1. Training of other restaurant staff;
2. Ensure presentation and temperature of all drinks are correct;
3. Updating wine list as necessary;
4. Placing order for all wines and other beverages;
5. Meet with suppliers and find new and exciting wines to add to our portfolio;
6. Ensure that wine service area is set up and ready for service;
7. Ensure that there is enough stock and equipment;
8. Ensure all equipment is in working order & report if not;
9. Ensure all decanters are clean and in good repair;
10. Ensure a minimum loss through breakage, waste, theft and incorrect orders;
11. Monthly stock-take of beverages;
12. Promote guest satisfaction;
13. Adhere strictly to the provisions and regulations as contained in the Liquor Act (No. 59 of 2003) and other regulations as may be applicable to the sale of alcoholic beverages.

REQUIREMENTS :

1. Grade 12 and certificate from Cape Wine Academy or WSET level 1
2. Preferably 1-2 years of wine tutor experience
3. In-depth knowledge of wines - grape varieties and regions, harvest times, climates, soils and wine-making process and being able to communicate and explain this to guests
4. Passionate about wine and the hospitality industry
5. Ability to maintain a professional working relationship with all departments
6. Comfortable in dealing with very distinguished clientele
7. Must be well-presented & enthusiastic
8. Must reside in Stellenbosch or close surrounding areas
