SGS South Africa, Matrolab Division is seeking to fill a key role in its Civil Engineering Site Laboratories and Commercial Laboratories. The role includes assisting the Supervisor/Laboratory Manager with all tasks, whether on site or in the commercial laboratory. Responsibilities include cleaning all equipment regularly, completing preparation of materials for testing, including soils, asphalt, seals, concrete, and aggregate, with bench calculation as required. The Assistant Materials Tester will ensure that the laboratory is clean at all times and will carry out all work-related instructions from technicians/supervisors or authorized personnel.
Job DescriptionReporting to the Site Laboratory Manager:
- Responsible for cleaning and maintaining company equipment regularly and ensuring all test equipment is cleaned after job completion.
- Responsible for the neatness of apparatus and environment, including cleaning up the site or workshop where the job was carried out and ensuring it is free of all consumables used.
- Adhere to all quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system.
- Orally report deviations, irregularities, and non-conformances.
- Perform any other reasonable tasks as assigned by the authorized site supervisor/laboratory manager and regional manager.
- Conduct quality and safety inspections as required.
- Lead daily “Safety Talks” at the commencement of the shift and submit paperwork to Senior Inspector.
- Handle all handover activities to the next shift efficiently.
- Wear appropriate Personal Protective Clothing/Equipment and enforce its use, storage, and maintenance to operators at all times.
- Maintain good housekeeping to keep the workplace clean and tidy.
- Perform any other reasonable tasks as assigned by the direct line manager.
Qualifications- Matric / Grade 12 completed.
- Sampling and preparation experience advantageous.
- Physically willing and able to work with, pick up, and move samples as required.
- Proficiency in English.
- Basic literacy and penmanship.
- Capable of understanding, implementing, and maintaining quality system requirements after training.
- Able to understand, implement, and maintain Civil Engineering Test Methods after training (e.g., SANS, THN 1).
