Quality Assurance Assistant Manager

Our client is looking for an experienced, self-motivated, and target-driven Quality Assurance Assistant Manager for their farm in the Klapmuts area.

Job Overview: The Quality Assurance Manager (QA) for the Blueberry Packhouse plays a pivotal role in maintaining and enhancing quality and hygiene standards of the blueberry packing process.

Reporting directly to the Packhouse Manager, this position involves overseeing the Quality Control (QC) team, implementing procedures, ensuring compliance, and contributing to overall packhouse efficiency.

Responsibilities
  1. Hygiene and Procedures: Verify and enforce correct hygiene, fruit handling, and temperature procedures. Ensure adherence to hygiene rules and traceability procedures. Monitor for pest activity and foreign body contamination.
  2. Quality Control Management: Oversee the QC function in the packhouse. Evaluate QC staff, assign duties, and provide continuous training. Communicate inspection results and advise leadership on quality matters.
  3. Shelf-Life Assessments: Complete all shelf-life assessments. Collect, analyze, and communicate shelf-life data. Collaborate in decision-making regarding fruit handling with the Packhouse Manager.
  4. Communication and Reporting: Communicate QC results, pest issues, and other relevant matters impacting fruit quality to growers. Report concerns and conduct regular farm visits. Liaise with exporters, customers, packhouse, and production units regarding fruit quality.
  5. Data Analysis and Documentation: Maintain accurate records. Collect and analyze QC data for monitoring and decision-making.
  6. Collaboration and Training: Work with the wider team, share knowledge, and foster a positive environment. Provide training and refresher courses to the QC team. Demonstrate computer skills, maintain confidentiality, and adhere to ethical standards.
  7. Compliance and Audits: Oversee compliance functions at the packhouse. Act as a supervisor/contact person between the client and the company. Assist with audits, provide advice, and make recommendations.
  8. Company Culture: Promote a positive culture on the farm and in the packhouse by encouraging collaboration, self-motivation, and pursuit of excellence. Share knowledge and facilitate development.
Requirements
  • Own transport.
  • Relevant experience in quality assurance, preferably in the fruit industry.
  • Proven leadership and management skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of blueberry production and post-harvest processes.
  • Ability to analyze data and make informed decisions.
  • Computer proficiency.
