Job summary

Gauteng Department of Health in Johannesburg invites applications for Assistant Manager Nursing Specialty Stream (PN-B4) CETU. The role leads nursing education, oversees training programmes and clinical placement, ensures quality care, and coordinates staff development.

The successful candidate must have SANC registration, a post-basic qualification in Nursing Education or Health Services Management, and extensive management experience in general nursing.

Qualifications

• Registered professional nurse with SANC.
• Minimum 10 years nursing experience after registration.
• At least 3 years of management level experience.
• At least 6 years of nursing experience in a clinical specialty after post-basic qualification in Nursing Education.
• Current SANC registration for 2026.

Responsibilities

• Develop the Operational Plan for training and development for the nursing department and implement in-service training programme.
• Coordinate nursing department training and compile yearly teaching programme.
• Implement and coordinate on-the-job staff development for permanent staff, post-basic students and basic students.
• Coordinate orientation and induction of all new staff.
• Promote quality nursing care in line with National Core standards.
• Participate in quality, skills development, institutional research, ethics and other committees.
• Mentor and coach nurses.
• Monitor CPD points in Nursing and develop CETU training initiatives.
• Coordinate clinical placements of nursing students and monitor absenteeism.
• Ensure safe and ethical nursing practice.

Requirements :

• Grade 12 certificate or equivalent. Basic R425 qualification (diploma/ degree in nursing) thatallows registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse. Registration with SANC andof current registration for 2026. A post qualification in Health Services Management/Nursing Administration registered with SANC will be an added advantage. A minimum of 10 years appropriate/recognizable experience in nursing after registration as a professional Nurse with the SANC in General Nursing. At least 6 years of the period referred to above must be appropriate/recognizable experience in a clinical specialty after obtaining the 1 year post basic qualification in Nursing Education. At least three (3) years of the period referred to above must be appropriate/recognizable experience at management level.COMPETENCIES/KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS: Competencies: leadership, ward management/ward administration,planning, organizing, co-ordination and communication skills. Ability to take charge and make appropriateindependent decisions. Display empathy for patients, promote advocacy and facilitate holistic treatment and care.Knowledge of administrative policies and guidelines.

Duties :

• Develop the Operational Plan for training and development for the nursing department and implement in-service training programme for the hospital. Coordination of nursing department’s training and compiling of yearly teaching programme. Implement and coordinate on-the-job staff development/ training of permanent staff, post-basic students and basic students. Coordination of orientation and induction of all new staff in the institution. Promotion of quality nursing care in line with National Core standards. Participate in quality, skills development, institutional research, ethics and other committees in the institution. Coaching and Mentorship of nurses. Monitor compliance with the CPD Points in Nursing. Propose and operationalize the business case of CETU (Clinical Education and Training Units). Develop Training in line with National core standards/Ideal Hospital Realisation and Maintenance Framework. Coordinate clinical placement of nursing students and monitor absenteeism liaising with affiliate training institutions. Compile student absenteeism reports and training statistics for the nursing department and attend stakeholder meetings. To ensure that nursing is practiced safely and ethically. Perform other extra duties as mutually determined by the institution. Relieve Nursing Managers when required.
