SGS South Africa, Matrolab Division, is seeking to fill a key role in its Civil Engineering Site Laboratories.

This role includes assisting the Supervisor / Laboratory Manager with all managerial and laboratory-related tasks, whether on-site or in the commercial laboratory.

The Assistant Laboratory Manager will help ensure that all equipment is cleaned and maintained regularly, that materials testing is completed across all laboratory divisions, including soils, asphalt, seals, concrete, and aggregate, with bench calculations as required.

The Assistant Laboratory Manager will also ensure the laboratory is clean at all times and will carry out all work-related instructions from technicians / supervisors or authorized personnel. The ideal candidate will possess integrity, good interpersonal skills, and the ability to command respect while maintaining good staff relationships.

A successful career in delivering performance against agreed strategic objectives and ensuring that all quality and testing methods are observed, with any deviations reported promptly, is essential.

Responsibilities

1. Assisting with accreditation and ensuring Health and Safety regulations are adhered to in and around the laboratory.
2. Verifying that the correct test methods are followed and reporting any deviations to the relevant reporting manager.
3. Adhering to all quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system.
4. Assisting technicians with any job, whether on-site or in the laboratory, as per instruction from the authorized site supervisor / laboratory manager.
5. Performing any other reasonable tasks as assigned by the authorized site supervisor / laboratory manager and regional manager.
6. Ensuring all functions continue as per procedure in the absence of the Laboratory Manager.
7. Supporting the Laboratory Manager with payroll instructions, leave forms, and other administrative duties.
8. Providing training to reporting staff as needed.

Minimum Requirements

1. Relevant National Diploma or NQF 6 / Grade 12 or NQF 4 equivalent or skills and experience sufficient to be recognized as a qualification through Recognition of Prior Learning.
2. Drivers License.
3. Relevant National Diploma and ten years relevant experience or NQF 6 and ten years relevant experience, OR Grade 12 and three years relevant experience or NQF 4 and fifteen years relevant experience.
4. Familiarity with all Civil Engineering Test Methods under THM1 and SANSP competencies.
5. Competent and qualified to conduct all tests in all laboratory divisions including soils, asphalt, seals, concrete, and aggregate.
6. Competent and qualified to implement quality laboratory control.
7. Competent and qualified to supervise and execute all fieldwork.
8. Familiarity with COLTO.
9. Knowledge of Health and Safety regulations.
10. Computer literate (Word, Excel, Outlook).
11. Physically able and willing to work with, process, and move samples as required.
