Job description

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is seeking a motivated, professional, and responsible team player to manage and coordinate health and safety in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulations, and Policy.

This position requires a degree in Safety Management, Environmental Health, or an equivalent qualification with NQF level 7. An Honours degree or an equivalent degree at NQF level 8 will be an added advantage.

The candidate must have at least 3 years of relevant work experience.

Required competencies include:

  1. Advanced knowledge and experience with NOSA and SAMTRAC systems.
  2. Extensive knowledge of legislation, policies, procedures, and frameworks related to occupational health and safety management.
  3. Strong project management, investigation, service focus, and negotiation skills.
  4. Ability to work with diverse teams under pressure, maintaining quality, cost, and safety standards.
  5. Excellent planning, organizing, interpersonal, accuracy, and problem-solving skills.
  6. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  7. Proficiency in MS Word, MS Project, PowerPoint, Excel, Internet, and Outlook.

A valid driver's license with at least one year of practical driving experience and willingness to travel are essential.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring SANBI achieves NOSA five-star grading.
  • Coordinating training for incident investigators and SHE representatives.
  • Maintaining SANBI's health and safety management system.
  • Implementing hygiene systems and surveys.
  • Managing health and safety training and awareness campaigns.
  • Overseeing incident reporting and management.
