Job Description

The role will be as an Assistant Consultant within the Climate Change and Air Quality team based in Johannesburg, although working on projects internationally, with a focus on greenhouse gas reporting and climate change risk assessments.

WSP Africa also runs projects outside of South Africa, presenting travelling opportunities and access to a diverse range of decarbonisation and climate resilience projects. From a global perspective, WSP Africa provides support to our Australian and Canadian Businesses, and collaborates closely with our UK Business, presenting unique opportunities to our local Climate Change team.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conducting greenhouse gas assessments in line with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, IPCC and ISO 14064 for a variety of sectors including mining and industrial clients.
  • Assessing climate change risks and opportunities for large-scale projects and private sector clients.
  • Compiling climate change impact reports and disclosures.
  • Analysing climate projection data for future scenarios.
  • Processing, formatting, and presenting climatological data.
  • Conduct project admin, including financial, health & safety, and project team co-ordination.
  • Provide assistance within the broader Air Quality team, and the WSP Earth & Environment business.

  • Act as a SHEQ role model, behaving consistently within the company’s health, safety, environmental and quality vision and policies.
  • Contribute to the identification of SHEQ risks and drive processes to achieve Zero Harm.
  • Embrace, display and promote company values, ensuring a safe working environment is maintained at all times.
Qualifications
  • An Honours degree or higher in a relevant engineering or environmental science discipline. Master’s level qualification by dissertation preferable.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in climate change consulting.
  • Some exposure to proposal writing will be advantageous.
  • Experience with technical report writing.

Key Competencies and Generic Skills:

  • Knowledge of the South African environmental legislation, particularly energy and climate change legislation.
  • Technical report writing skills to produce professional reports in fluent English.
  • Technical skills and attention to detail to be able to calculate and analyse technical information and environmental data.
  • Willingness to travel in Sub Sahara Africa (outside of South Africa) if required.
