Job Description
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
To ensure that all electrical (MV and LV) equipment and machines, pertaining to hostels and campus facilities are in a safe working condition and maintained according to all regulations and statutory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
General Maintenance and contractor management
- Ensure all faulty equipment are repaired to SANS 10142 regulations.
- Use Planon to manage the Maintenance process.
- Manage the emergency issues as well as the job cards issued to the contractor and certify completed work.
- Ensure work are prioritized to ensure the NWU core functions.
- Certify contractor invoices and verify all work are done according to regulations.
Preventative maintenance
- Work according to preventative schedule and within budget.
- Liaise with building representative and ensure compliance.
- Ensure preventative work are done within budget and according to schedule.
Regular inspections on equipment
- Inspect all work by artisan assistant and contractor.
- Ensure compliance of all electrical equipment, as per the OHS act.
- Record all inspection sheets and report any defect asap.
- Ensure job cards are generated for all electrical defaults and follow up completion thereof.
Issue safe working permits and do risk assessments and OHS
- Ensure all work are done according to regulations and safety requirements.
- Issue permits and use lockout devices and ensure safe work procedures are in place.
- Inform management to assist with permits and lockout procedures.
- Report on all issues urgently.
Manage Artisan Assistants
- Influence, assist and lead Artisans to ensure all work are done according to the regulations.
- Follow up on completed work and give guidance where needed.
- Ensure training is provided to Artisan Assistant.
Communicate with technician regarding maintenance
- Regularly update users regarding maintenance work, progress status and schedules.
- Manage maintenance work and complete job card as per job card system.
- Give feedback to users and ensure compliance.
- Update and inform assistants as per requirements.
Key Functional/ Technical Competencies
- Good communication skills and fault reporting.
- Ability to work according to planning schedules with measurable intermediate goals.
- Computer Literacy to work with electronic job cards.
- Advanced knowledge of infrastructure processes.
- Ability to function under pressure and make decisions according to regulations.

- Enthusiastic team player with positive social and interpersonal skills.
Minimum Requirements
- A Trade Certificate (NQF Level 4).
- A minimum of five (5) years’ technical experience related to the field of expertise.
- A minimum of five (5) years’ planned maintenance experience.
Added Advantages
- A National Diploma (NQF Level 6) in Electrical Engineering.
Remuneration
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
