Qualifications

Overview

Job title: Area Construction Manager - 12-month Fixed Term Contract

Job Location: Gauteng, Johannesburg

Responsibilities
  • Be responsible for the overallplanning, direction, organization, and budgeting of all constructionon the project to the highest safety and quality levels within time and costs constraints.
  • The Construction Manager participates in the conceptual development of a construction project and oversees organization, scheduling and implementation strategy.
  • You bring to the role : Responsible for all safety planning associated with the project construction execution methods selection, with support ofthe Project Manager and Site Health and Safety Manager
  • Responsible through the constructability coordinator to setup and oversee the constructability process
  • Coordinate with the client, project management, and projectservices in identifying required reporting procedures andformats for client and Hatch management needs
  • Establishes project field procedures and objectives withincorporate policies and procedures as necessitated by jobsiteconditions
  • Review and approve construction estimates, budgets,forecasts and schedules
  • Review construction / erection drawings and specifications,develop strategies for erection interfaces, determineappropriate construction methods and pre-empt problemareas
  • Ensure the necessary permits and licenses (notice of project,insurance certificates, workers compensation, environmentalpermits etc.) are identified and obtained prior to the start ofconstruction activities on site
  • Liaises with the Project Manager and the project core team of design engineers, procurement, planning and scheduling andother personnel and other personnel as required in settingpriorities to ensure timely construction performance
  • Liaises with Client team, Engineers and Contractors to deliverthe project in a safe manner, on time and within budget
  • Liaison between Contractor and Engineers to resolve fieldengineering queries
  • Develop site organization and staffing requirements requiredto execute construction activities within project schedule andacceptable costs
  • Direct, monitor and motivate subordinate constructionspecialists in performance and direct activities as necessaryto ensure project requirements are achieved
  • Ensure adherence to all local regulations and statutoryrequirements in site activities planning
  • Assist the procurement team to review contractualagreements with clients, suppliers, and contractors
  • Liaise with client representatives as required to ensureshutdowns, relocations, tie ins, etc. are planned safely and ina timely manner with minimum disruption
  • Recommend requirements for construction resources and strategies to meet the schedule in each area
  • Participates in the labor studies, manpower sourcing exerciseand the establishment of the industrial relations strategy
  • Work with Contract Administrator to ensure contractorsadhere to the requirements of their contracts
  • Assist with management of Contractor claims
  • Chair Contractor progress, cost and safety meetings
Qualifications and Experience
  • National Diploma / Degree in Engineering
  • Minimum of 12 to 15 years’ experience in construction ofwhich 5 to 7 years should be Construction Management
  • Experience in the EPCM mining and construction environment
  • Demonstrated health and safety management focus inthe construction phase of project delivery, and extensiveknowledge of health and safety management procedures,safe work practices, and applicable legislation
  • Registration as Professional Construction Manager with SACPCMP or equivalent will be advantageous
  • Strong leadership skills, the ability to lead a team and fit intoa team environment
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
  • Effective report writing skills, planning and organizationalskills
  • Well-developed communication, negotiation andinterpersonal skills
  • Able to communicate directly with the client on key issues
  • Extensive knowledge of all phases of construction operations
  • relating to field activities of all engineering disciplines,construction and maintenance practices, procedures andtechniques, and applicable codes and standards
  • Familiarity with a wide range of equipment, tools, andtechnologies used in construction
