Job summary

SGS is recruiting a laboratory support professional in South Africa, relocating to Forzando if required. The role involves logging samples in SLIMS, performing analyses, printing labels, and ensuring correct sorting and labeling of specimens.

You will report results on time, follow all quality directives, and operate lab instruments within ISO17025 frameworks. Requirements include a BSc/BTech/ND Analytical Chemistry or equivalent, Grade 12 with Math and Science, and strong MS Office skills.

Qualifications

  • Understanding of analytical chemistry fundamentals and lab workflows.
  • Basic familiarity with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in handling samples and data.

Responsibilities

  • Log received samples into the SLIMS using client work orders.
  • Analyze analytical samples using the prescribed procedures and methods.
  • Print sample labels and ensure correct sorting before labeling and boxing.
  • Report results within the specified time frame and follow quality directives.
  • Operate laboratory instrumentation and flag issues to the Chemist.
  • Adhere to quality, health, safety rules and ISO17025 requirements.
  • Record maintenance, calibration and verification of instruments.
  • Assist with SANAS audits and monthly stock counts in the department.
  • Maintain housekeeping and document data traceability in files or LIMS.

Job Description
  • Responsibility to log received samples into the SLIMS using work orders from the client.
  • Responsibility of analyzing all analytical samples using the correct procedures and/or methods.
  • Responsibility to print sample labels.
  • Responsibilities to ensure samples are sorted correctly before labeling and boxing the samples.
  • Responsibility to report results within the time frame specified.
  • Responsibility to follow all quality directives of this Department.
  • Responsible for operation of laboratory instrumentation
  • Responsibility to bring all problems (technical and managerial) to the attention of the Chemist.
  • Responsibility to adhere to all quality, health and safety rules and regulations.
  • Responsibility to ensure that the housekeeping in the receiving /working areas are in order.
  • Complies and conforms to Laboratory Quality Management System (ISO17025).
  • Must be able to help with the preparation of SANAS audits
  • Responsibility to record any day-to-day repairs, maintenance, calibration and verification of instruments.
  • All analytical data and calculations shall be made traceable and stored in the relevant files for that purpose or LIMS.
  • Responsibility to work in other areas and/or Divisions if asked to do so.
  • Adhere to all quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system
  • Follow Supervisors clear detailed instructions and demonstrate flexibility in executing duties.
  • Perform any other reasonable tasks as assigned by direct line manager.
  • Shall adhere to all Health, Safety and Environmental requirements of the SGS OI Management System, country legislation, Rules for Life, local legal requirements and laws.
  • Shall comply and conform to the QHSE, Global and country policies of SGS.
  • Participate and form part of Operational Integrity projects and campaigns.
  • Shall report Health, Safety and Environmental hazards, incidents/accidents and near misses to the Supervisor/SHE Representative/Location Manager/OI Site Coordinator.
  • Apply Check status process and use the Stop Work Authority whenever the control of risks is not clearly established and understood.
  • Observe and report any faulty/nonfunctioning apparatus or equipment and or deviations from process/protocols/procedures/work instructions, to the Supervisor/Location Manager.
  • Assist in investigations.
  • Ensure that all proper procedures/Working instructions, etc. are followed.
  • Assist with training of employee/s where required.
  • Perform and ensure good housekeeping practices are maintained in all work areas at all times.
  • Participate and adhere to all HSE Procedures/Working instructions, Integrity, Safe Talks, Toolbox talks, etc. training.
  • Assist in the monthly stock counts within the department
Qualifications
  • BSc, BTech or National Diploma in Analytical Chemistry or proven years of laboratory, knowledge, skills and experience sufficient to be recognized as a qualification through – Recognition of Prior Learning.
  • Grade 12 / Matric with Mathematics and Science as subjects.
