Job summary

SGS is seeking a laboratory candidate in Cape Town to log samples, analyze analytically, and ensure results are reported on time. The role requires handling instruments, labeling, and strict adherence to ISO17025 and safety rules.

The successful applicant should have a BTech or National Diploma in Analytical Chemistry or equivalent through RPL, and be matriculated with Math and Science. Relocation to Somerset West may be required, with strong attention to detail and quality standards.

Qualifications

  • BTech or National Diploma in Analytical Chemistry or recognized via RPL.
  • Grade 12 with Mathematics and Science.

Responsibilities

  • Log received samples into SLIMS using client work orders.
  • Analyze analytical samples following approved methods.
  • Print and label samples accurately.
  • Sort and box samples correctly before labeling.
  • Report results within required time frames.
  • Follow all quality and safety directives.
  • Operate laboratory instrumentation.
  • Escalate problems to the Chemist.
  • Maintain housekeeping and comply with ISO17025.
  • Prepare for SANAS audits.
  • Record maintenance/calibration of instruments.
  • Ensure data traceability and proper filing.
  • Be flexible to work in other areas/divisions.
  • Comply with HSE and SGS policies.
  • Participate in integrity projects and report hazards.
  • Assist with training of staff.
  • Contribute to monthly stock counts.

Overview

  • Responsibility to log received samples into the SLIMS using work orders from the client.
  • Responsibility of analyzing all analytical samples using the correct procedures and/or methods.
  • Responsibility to print sample labels.
  • Responsibilities to ensure samples are sorted correctly before labeling and boxing the samples.
  • Responsibility to report results within the time frame specified.
  • Responsibility to follow all quality directives of this Department.
  • Responsible for operation of laboratory instrumentation
  • Responsibility to bring all problems (technical and managerial) to the attention of the Chemist.
  • Responsibility to adhere to all quality, health and safety rules and regulations.
  • Responsibility to ensure that the housekeeping in the receiving /working areas are in order.
  • Complies and conforms to Laboratory Quality Management System (ISO17025).
  • Must be able to help with the preparation of SANAS audits
  • Responsibility to record any day-to-day repairs, maintenance, calibration and verification of instruments.
  • All analytical data and calculations shall be made traceable and stored in the relevant files for that purpose or LIMS.
  • Responsibility to work in other areas and/or Divisions if asked to do so.
  • Adhere to all quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system
  • Follow Supervisors clear detailed instructions and demonstrate flexibility in executing duties.
  • Perform any other reasonable tasks as assigned by direct line manager.
  • Shall adhere to all Health, Safety and Environmental requirements of the SGS OI Management System, country legislation, Rules for Life, local legal requirements and laws.
  • Shall comply and conform to the QHSE, Global and country policies of SGS.
  • Participate and form part of Operational Integrity projects and campaigns.
  • Shall report Health, Safety and Environmental hazards, incidents/accidents and near misses to the Supervisor/SHE Representative/Location Manager/OI Site Coordinator.
  • Apply Check status process and use the Stop Work Authority whenever the control of risks is not clearly established and understood.
  • Observe and report any faulty/nonfunctioning apparatus or equipment and or deviations from process/protocols/procedures/work instructions, to the Supervisor/Location Manager.
  • Assist in investigations.
  • Ensure that all proper procedures/Working instructions, etc. are followed.
  • Assist with training of employee/s where required.
  • Perform and ensure good housekeeping practices are maintained in all work areas at all times.
  • Participate and adhere to all HSE Procedures/Working instructions, Integrity, Safe Talks, Toolbox talks, etc. training.
  • Assist in the monthly stock counts within the department
Qualifications
  • BTech or National Diploma in Analytical Chemistry or proven years of laboratory, knowledge, skills and experience sufficient to be recognized as a qualification through – Recognition of Prior Learning.
  • Grade 12 / Matricwith Mathematics and Science as subjects.
Additional Information
  • Be a South African citizen (be able to produce a valid South African ID document)
  • Be between the ages of 18-30
  • Must be currently unemployed
  • Must have no criminal record
  • Must be willing to relocate to Somerset West.
