Job summary

PBT Group in Johannesburg is seeking an experienced AI Automation Engineer to join a 12-month consulting engagement based in Midrand. You will design, develop, deploy and support intelligent automation solutions to improve efficiency, service quality, compliance and customer experience.

The role focuses on AI-enabled automation, RPA, workflow solutions, API integrations and digital process automation within a large enterprise.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in CS/IS/Engineering/BIT or related field.
• 5+ years’ experience in Software Engineering, Automation Engineering, Systems Analysis or Digital Process Automation.
• Minimum 2 years’ hands-on experience delivering Intelligent Automation / RPA solutions in an enterprise environment.
• Strong understanding of automation architecture, integration and enterprise application environments.
• Experience taking automation solutions through the full SDLC – design, development, testing, deployment and production support.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Certifications such as UiPath / Power Platform / ITIL / Agile are advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop intelligent automation solutions aligned with business requirements, architecture standards and security controls.
• Build, configure, test and deploy automation solutions including RPA bots, workflows, APIs, scripts and reusable components.
• Translate business requirements into practical and scalable automation solutions.
• Perform technical solution design, feasibility assessments and effort estimation.
• Identify opportunities to automate and optimise business processes.
• Develop solutions using UiPath, Power Automate, Python, SQL, REST APIs, JSON and XML.
• Integrate applications, systems and services through APIs and other integration mechanisms.
• Incorporate AI/GenAI capabilities into automation solutions where appropriate.
• Support document processing, OCR/Intelligent Document Processing and AI-assisted workflows.
• Perform unit, integration and UAT support testing.
• Deploy solutions into production and provide Level 2 / Level 3 production support.
• Troubleshoot automation failures, perform root-cause analysis and implement corrective actions.
• Monitor and optimise automation solutions to improve stability, performance and reliability.
• Maintain technical documentation, solution designs, operational runbooks and support documentation.
• Participate in code reviews and promote reusable, maintainable and secure development practices.
• Work within Agile delivery environments, including Scrum and/or Kanban.
• Collaborate closely with Business Analysts, Architects, Developers, Process Owners and other technical teams.
• Contribute to automation standards, governance and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Support CI/CD, DevOps, version control and release management practices.
