Project Context

Tanager South Africa is implementing the Imbewu Farmer Development project in the O.R. Tambo Region, Mthatha, Eastern Cape, South Africa, from 1 April to 31 December. The project's goal is to increase agricultural productivity and incomes of smallholder maize farmers by facilitating their access to commercial markets. Funding is provided by the John Deere Foundation.

Position Overview

We are seeking an Agronomist to support smallholders and lead farmers within the project. The Agronomist will serve as the primary contact for farmers, input providers, mechanization services, maize storage, and buyers, based in Mthatha, reporting to the Imbewu Team Lead.

Responsibilities
  1. Conduct training sessions on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), including soil health, pest management, water efficiency, and post-harvest handling.
  2. Visit demo plots and farms regularly to monitor crop progress, identify issues, and provide guidance.
  3. Act as the main liaison among farmers, input suppliers, mechanization providers, storage facilities, and buyers to ensure effective communication.
  4. Provide tailored agronomic advice to enhance productivity and sustainability.
  5. Coordinate with input providers to ensure timely supply of seeds, fertilizers, and other inputs.
  6. Facilitate connections between farmers and buyers, ensuring produce quality and fair pricing.
  7. Oversee the operation of aggregation plots for maize storage and processing.
  8. Support MEL team in data collection and reporting for project impact evaluation.
  9. Contribute technical inputs to work plans and deliverables.
  10. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in agricultural science, agribusiness, extension, or related field.
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience in agricultural projects supporting smallholder farmers.
  • Experience in grain production is advantageous.
  • Fluent in English; proficiency in Xhosa or Zulu is required.
Skills and Capabilities
  • Proficiency in MS Office and communication tools.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent communication skills in English and regional languages.
  • Willingness to travel as needed.
  • Experience with GAP training materials and field reporting.
Work Duration and Logistics

The assignment is expected to require approximately 50 working days, including field visits, training, and reporting.

Billing and Expenses

Allowable costs include airfare, MIE, labor, and miscellaneous expenses, reimbursed upon submission of receipts. Per diem and travel costs are covered with prior approval.
