Agronomist - Port Elizabeth

Our client, a highly respected Citrus Producer located in the Sundays River Valley in the Eastern Cape, is part of one of the world's largest fresh fruit companies. They are seeking a highly skilled Agronomist with at least 5 years of experience in the agronomic field and a proven track record in commercial citrus farming to join their technical team.

Qualification Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Agriculture, with a major in horticulture, crop science, agronomy, or soil science.
Skills and Attributes for Success
  • Minimum 5+ years’ experience in the agronomic field.
  • Experience in plant selection, and developing planting and irrigation schedules, budgets, and timelines.
  • Proficiency with MS Office and diagnostic scientific software.
  • Strong research, decision-making, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Awareness of industry trends, technology, and developments.
  • Excellent listening, verbal, written communication, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Mentoring abilities for subordinates.
  • Capability to present technical information to senior management, officials, farmers, and stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
  • Manage fertilizer programs and water management on approximately 1400 ha of citrus.
  • Oversee annual budgets for these programs (~R40 million).
  • Provide input on farming practices, including irrigation, pruning, and yield estimates.
  • Develop and implement crop management strategies to optimize yields, quality, and profitability.
  • Analyze soil composition and fertility to recommend improvements for sustainable soil management.
  • Develop and implement efficient irrigation and water conservation strategies.
  • Conduct research to develop new crop varieties, soil management techniques, and irrigation systems.
  • Offer expert advice to farmers, agricultural companies, and government agencies on best practices.
  • Collect and analyze data on crop yields, soil health, and water usage; prepare reports to inform decision-making.
