Job description

We are a well-established accounting and auditing firm seeking a hands-on Accountant Assistant to join our professional team. This position is ideal for someone who has practical experience in an accounting firm and is looking to grow their skills in a structured environment. A degree is not required, but experience in bookkeeping and accounting firm operations is essential.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with the preparation of monthly and annual financial statements
  • Capture and process daily financial transactions
  • Reconcile bank statements, debtors, and creditors
  • Assist in the preparation and submission of VAT, PAYE, and provisional tax returns
  • Maintain and organize client records and source documents
  • Help with the preparation of audit files and supporting schedules
  • Communicate with clients to follow up on outstanding documents
  • Load payments for approval and process supplier invoices
  • Support senior accountants with general ledger maintenance and financial reporting
  • Perform general administrative tasks related to accounting functions
  • Ensure deadlines and compliance standards are met for client submissions

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum of 5 - 7 years experience working in an accounting or auditing firm
  • Solid understanding of accounting principles and bookkeeping tasks
  • Experience with accounting software such as Sage, Pastel, or Xero
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and basic spreadsheet functions
  • Familiarity with SARS eFiling and tax submissions (VAT, PAYE)
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple client files
  • Professional communication and client service orientation
