Job Summary

As an Academic Content Editor you must have a passion, experience in skill for language, impactful and constructively aligned learning material, and engaging learning experiences. You will have the opportunity to showcase your eagle eye for grammatical errors, factual inaccuracies, logical gaps and stylistic issues.

As the Academic Content Editor you will be accountable for quality assurance of all content for our short courses and occupational qualifications in the fields of design, creative communications, marketing, business and creative technology. You will review content for accuracy, logical flow, constructive alignment, and educational impact and edit course content to ensure that we deliver concise and engaging learning experiences, wielding your expertise in learning experience design and language editing. The role reports to the Academic Manager of Programme Development and is based in Cape Town.

Key Responsibilities and Duties
  • With the guidance of the Academic Manager of Programme Development, and the Team Lead for Learning Experience Design, review, improve and correctly reference content crafted by human experts (with a sprinkling of AI magic).
  • When reviewing content, ensure factual accuracy, identify and address areas for improvement - in relation to the learning experience, constructive alignment of learning outcomes, content, and assessments - and refine content to resonate with our learners.
  • Edit course content - including written sections, interactive elements, video and podcast scripts, and assessments - for grammaticality, style, and logical flow, eliminating grammatical and stylistic gremlins.
  • Work closely with curriculum designers, learning experience designers, learning technologists, and subject matter experts, advocating for open communication and shared goals.
  • Ensure that subject matter experts have been consulted and feedback has been incorporated in the course design
  • Contribute to the update / improvement process of existing short course and occupational qualification content in line with curriculum specifications.
  • Occasionally craft engaging content and imagineer exceptional learning experiences based on the principles that underpin best instructional design practice.
  • Manage own workload, prioritise tasks effectively, and meet deadlines.
  • Serve on a R&Y academic committee
  • Contribute the Academic Research
Qualifications and Experience
  • An undergraduate degree (NQF 7) in English, linguistics, or education
  • Demonstrated experience in online learning and adult education and the principles involved
  • Demonstrated experience in language editing (English)
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience as an instructional or learning designer
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience as an English language editor (or in a similar role)
  • Excellent English, written and verbal communication skills - with a specific focus on both academic writing skills and using plain English masterfully.
  • Proficiency in MS Word/Google Docs, Google Sheets / Excel, MS Powerpoint / Google Slides
  • Participate in the general quality assurance functions of the R&Y academic team, such as serving on an academic committee
  • Work with the course delivery team to ensure a seamless and high-quality student experience
