We are hiring an Engineering Manager to lead the team responsible for delivering core Ubuntu components, including system startup, compilers, language runtimes, toolchains, networking, and storage configuration and management. This is a fast-paced, highly technical role at the core of Linux server systems.

As an Engineering Manager on the Foundations team, you will play a pivotal role in driving Ubuntu forward, working at the intersection of the open source ecosystem and enterprise technology. You will lead and inspire your engineering team, fostering technical excellence, culture, and strategic execution. A deep understanding of Linux and Ubuntu, coupled with strong leadership skills, is essential.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Lead and grow a distributed engineering team
  2. Demonstrate sound engineering principles through active leadership
  3. Plan, estimate, and oversee project execution
  4. Collaborate with product management to define vision and strategy
  5. Coordinate with cross-functional teams
  6. Promote modern software development practices
  7. Foster a healthy, collaborative engineering culture aligned with company values
  8. Coordinate with other teams to ensure alignment on architecture and roadmaps
  9. Participate in in-person sprints twice a year
Candidate Requirements:
  1. Extensive experience with Linux distributions and packaging technologies (e.g., deb, rpm)
  2. Experience managing or leading software engineering teams
  3. Strong knowledge in Linux system architecture, boot process, and toolchains (Java, GCC, Python, Rust, Go); experience with ARM and RISC-V is a plus
  4. Engagement with open source communities and processes
