Matrix is seeking a Port and Terminal National Market Lead to drive business development and project execution across North America. If you’re a senior business development leader ready to own a market, hire your team, add new services, and shape strategy (including M&A scouting) then this role gives you the seat, the authority, and the capital support to do it. You’ll lead growth across an integrated service portfolio that includes environmental engineering; structural, geotechnical, and coastal engineering; regulatory permitting; asset management; port decarbonization; planning; dredging; and related marine services.

What You’ll Do
  • Leadership
  • Partner with the Marine & Coastal Practice Lead and Regional Development Lead on strategic planning, annual business plans, and market-wide initiatives
  • Participate in leadership meetings, shaping decisions on staffing, expansion, and operational priorities
  • Influence hiring decisions across development and technical teams to ensure alignment with growth goals
  • Market Building
  • Own the ports & terminals go-to-market strategy: segmentation, pursuit selection, offer design, pricing, and win plans
  • Build a national pipeline with port authorities, terminal operators, stevedores, bulk cargo owners, energy majors, and marine contractors; convert anchor accounts into multi-year programs
  • Target high-priority agencies and operators (e.g., PANYNJ, APMT, Ports America, Enstructure, etc.) aligning pursuits to funding and capital plans.
  • Recommend and support development of new service lines (e.g., port decarbonization, marine MEP, and port planning) that meet current and future market/client needs
  • Develop strategy for relevant industry events and plan attendance, messaging, and targets to maximize return.
  • Thought Leadership & Solutions
  • Partner with our private equity partner to source, evaluate, and recommend acquisitions that accelerate regional presence, specialty capabilities, or client access; lead commercial due diligence on targets and post-close integration plans
  • Shape offerings to distinguish our services and capabilities from competitors
  • Develop cross-platform strategies with other True Companies across Clients and Markets
  • Sponsor capture for complex delivery models (e.g., design-build/alternative delivery) and multi-disciplinary teaming
  • Execution & Governance
  • Drive CRM best practices, forecast accuracy, and stage-gate discipline; lead reviews and develop business plans
  • Hire and develop client account managers.
  • Monitor and drive pre-pursuit planning
  • Lead proposal development with Matrix and True marketing team support
  • Lead project delivery as Project Director or Project Manager, as required
Why this role?
  • Opportunity: Funding and authority to develop a market including initiatives, strategic hires, as well as mergers and acquisitions
  • Influence: Ability to influence True’s direction administratively, operationally, and from business development perspective
  • Resources: Midsize-firm agility with growth-oriented PE-backed capital and executive access - no bureaucracy
  • Build Something Enduring: Architect the national ports & terminals franchise and hire the team you believe in
  • Own the Client Relationship and Project Portfolio: Shape services and deploy innovative delivery models with decision making and signatory authority
  • Market Tailwinds: Durable nationwide demand from container, bulk cargo, energy and utilities sectors, including significant planned investment across tri-state area (PANYNJ tenants, PANYNJ, and NYCEDC BMT, MCT, and Hunts Point)
Minimum Qualifications
  • 12–20+ years in the AEC sector with ports/terminals BD leadership and a proven record of winning and delivering large multi-disciplinary programs
  • Deep relationships with port authorities, terminal operators, bulk cargo/energy, marine contractors, and consultant ecosystems in priority regions (Tri-State, Mid-Atlantic, Gulf, West Coast)
  • Fluency in integrated services across structural, geotechnical, coastal, permitting, dredging, planning, and asset management; familiarity with hydrographic/geomatics workflows a plus
  • Working knowledge of port decarbonization market (shore power, alternative fuels, hybrid systems) and terminal operations
  • Bachelor’s in engineering or related field
Preferred Qualifications
  • P.E. helpful, but not required.
  • Advanced degree (MBA/MS) or board certifications a plus
  • Comfort with alternative delivery and complex teaming structures; strong capture, proposal leadership, and price-to-win acumen
  • Executive presence, high EQ, and a builder’s mindset; able to recruit, coach, and scale high-performing teams
