Job summary

Dallas Zoo in Dallas, Texas, seeks an entry-level, full-time Animal Operations team member to care for the Houston Toad colony, assist with feeding, exhibit maintenance, pest control, and environmental enrichment.

You will support propagation, rearing, and management for conservation programs, maintain records, and participate in educational presentations for guests. This grant-funded role runs 2026–2031 and requires teamwork and adherence to safety protocols.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in biology or related science preferred.
• Knowledge of animal care and basic husbandry.
• Flexible, efficient team player with a solutions mindset.
• Solid observation skills.
• Willingness to learn handling of diverse taxa.
• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

Responsibilities

• Provide overall daily care of assigned animals and exhibits to ensure health, safety, and welfare.
• Prepare and provide food; provide water and administer medications as instructed.
• Clean exhibits, holding pens, and prep areas; maintain sanitation and perform pest control.
• Provide environmental enrichment and training using operant conditioning where applicable.
• Assist with capture and restraint of various taxa, including potentially dangerous species.
• Prepare and update animal records, reports and surveys; assist in research projects.
• Perform maintenance on exhibits (painting, fence repair, erosion abatement, vegetation).
• Assist with animal transfers and procedures as directed.
• Interact professionally with staff, volunteers, and guests; support educational programs.
