Your Job Description
This role focuses on caring for Tulsa Zoo's giraffes, rhinos, and African hoofstock, with cross-training and assistance with elephants as needed. Responsibilities include daily animal care, exhibit maintenance, diet prep, conservation programs, veterinary procedures, enrichment, education, and guest engagement.
Essential Responsibilities
- Clean exhibits and service areas daily using appropriate tools and disinfectants.
- Prepare and manage animal diets, including inventory and supply ordering.
- Maintain exhibit infrastructure and safety features, such as fencing and shade structures.
- Design and construct exhibit features, including habitat enhancements and privacy barriers.
- Capture and restrain animals safely for medical or transport purposes.
- Assist with medical treatments, including medication administration and veterinary procedures.
- Observe and record animal behavior and health daily, noting any abnormalities or concerns.
- Monitor life support systems and report maintenance needs.
- Collaborate with animal care teams on training, enrichment, and breeding protocols.
- Assist with animal transfers, including crate training and transportation.
- Supervise volunteers and interns, ensuring safety and proper training.
- Respond to emergency situations and participate in staff meetings and training.
- Engage in public education through presentations and outreach programs.
- Maintain required certifications and vaccinations.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support zoo operations.
Qualifications
- At least 18 years old, with a valid driver’s license and insurability.
- Availability to work weekends, evenings, and holidays.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience, with at least six months of exotic animal experience.
- Ability to read and write effectively, and operate various equipment and vehicles.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office; familiarity with ZIMS is a plus.
