Job summary

City of Hampton seeks an experienced Deputy Zoning Administrator to join the Community Development team. You will manage zoning determinations, appeals, and development reviews, while supporting the Board of Zoning Appeals and ensuring the ordinance stays current.

Reporting to the Zoning Administrator, you’ll collaborate with the City Attorney’s Office and multiple departments to deliver timely, compliant zoning services and excellent customer service in a dynamic environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Planning, Public or Governmental Administration or related field.
• At least 5 years in municipal government with planning/zoning experience; 3+ years in development review, ordinance amendments.
• AICP or VAZO zoning official certification preferred.
• Knowledge of zoning laws, ordinances, and legal procedures.
• Ability to read architectural and engineering drawings, site plans, deeds, and environmental reports.
• Proficient in PCs and land use regulation software; driver license and clean record.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate zoning determinations, appeals, and development reviews.
• Provide staff support to the Board of Zoning Appeals.
• Collaborate with Zoning Administrator, City Attorney’s Office, and City departments.
• Maintain legally current zoning ordinance aligned with policy.
• Deliver accurate, efficient, and timely zoning services.
