Position Overview:

  • Performs inspection, maintenance and repair work on building systems and components under general supervision using the tools and techniques of various technologies, including electrical, carpentry, mechanical and plumbing.

Location:

  • The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Facilities Department located in Baltimore, MD.

Schedule:

  • 3:00 pm - 11:30 pm (Evening Shift).

Authority/ Decision Making:

  • Makes decisions based on trade practices and supervisor direction as appropriate for the scope of this position.
  • Recommends and participates in departmental maintenance operations development and improvement.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Trains peer and lower level positions as directed by supervisor.

Problem Solving:

  • Identifies, analyzes, diagnoses and resolves routine maintenance problems.

Information Management:

  • Reads and interprets schematic and construction drawings, service manuals and other technical documents.
  • Follows instructions provided by blueprints, drawings, written materials, work orders and oral instruction.
  • Communicates with supervisor and departmental staff.
  • Assimilates departmental mission, policies and procedures as well as specific job safety aspects.

Working Conditions:

  • Works in shop and mechanical area environments with exposure to dust, heat, cold, noise and fumes.
  • Work may be performed outdoors with exposure to extreme temperatures.
  • Gets into/works within confined spaces and in awkward positions.
  • Works at heights of up to 30 feet above surface using ladders, lifts and equipment.
  • Work requires ability to stand, walk or sit for extended periods of time.
  • Work requires ability to load/unload and transport/position tools, equipment and materials.
  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous materials, and pharmacological agents.
  • Work requires the use of protective safety devices.
  • Work requires attention to detail.
  • Work requires visual acuity and manual dexterity.

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Training in multiple trades programs at a vocational or technical school, college, or apprenticeship sponsor organization.

Work experience:

  • 5 years related work experience in a multi-complex maintenance environment.
  • The full-time equivalent spent in trades programs may count toward the 5-year work experience requirement.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of basic electrical, carpentry, mechanical and plumbing techniques, procedures and materials.
  • Knowledge of building elements and codes.
  • Knowledge of safety rules, procedures and practices.

Skills:

  • Applies trades and safety knowledge.
  • Safely uses tools and equipment.
  • Ability to solve problems and manage information.
  • Identifies and avoids hazards.

Machines, Tools, Equipment:

  • All types of tools and equipment normally used in the various trades, including specialized equipment, as well as common powered bench and hand tools.
