Zonal Food Service Assistant - Graham High (2024-2025)

Position Purpose

The School Nutrition Assistant prepares and serves breakfast, lunch, and other food to school children and adults in a courteous, customer service-oriented manner. They are responsible for organizing and setting up equipment and workstations as directed by the SNS Manager, complying with USDA, health, food service, and other regulations. Proper operation of cafeteria equipment is essential.

  • FLSA Status: Non-exempt
  • Reports To: School Nutrition Manager
  • Supervises: None
  • Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 30 hours/week
  • Months Per Year: Based on school calendar
Minimum Qualifications
  • Basic ability to read, speak, and understand English and to count currency, make change at the register.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of food preparation and service materials and methods.
  • Familiarity with food preparation equipment.
  • Skill in using kitchen utensils and equipment.
  • Effective working relationships with staff and students.
  • Ability to maintain emotional control and confidentiality, especially regarding students qualifying for Free and Reduced Lunch.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team environment and address customers courteously.
Education, Training, and Experience
  • Ability to read and follow written menus and schedules.
Certification and License Requirements
  • Valid food handler's certification or card as required by state and USDA.
  • Participation in ongoing food service education courses.
  • Valid driver's license issued by NC DMV.
Preferred Qualifications
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Experience in a school cafeteria within the last five years.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintain hygiene and sanitation standards.
  • Operate and monitor equipment at the start of each day.
  • Prepare and serve food according to instructions.
  • Handle cashiering and serve a la carte items.
  • Replenish and clean serving areas.
  • Monitor food and equipment temperatures.
  • Display courteous and professional behavior.
  • Perform dishwashing and setup/breakdown duties.
  • Manage inventory and participate in training and promotional activities.
  • Ensure a safe, clean, and organized work environment.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the manager.
