Job summary

BronxWorks is seeking a Youth Program staff member to assist with developing goals, activities and fostering a nurturing environment for youth. The role includes leading recreational and educational activities, managing a classroom setting, and serving as a liaison with parents in a community-centered program.

Applicants should have a high school diploma or equivalent and 3 months to 1 year of youth-related experience, plus clearance requirements.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • 3 months to 1 year experience with youth in recreational, educational or social settings.
  • Clearance through New York State Central Registry and NYS Office of Children and Family Services required.
  • Experience with youth development practices preferred.
  • Ability to establish rapport with young people.
  • Engaging personality and attention to detail are essential.
  • Strong oral and written communication, time management and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Program Director or Program Coordinator with development of program goals and activities for youth.
  • Create a nurturing and supportive environment for the youth.
  • Implement various recreational, educational, social, and team-building activities.
  • Provide classroom management and instruction.

  • Attend regular staff meetings.
  • Attend First Aid, CPR, and Responding to Emergency training.
  • Attend staff training sessions.

Our Cornerstone community center youth programs are designed to provide engaging, high-quality youth services in partnership with NYCHA and our strong network of nonprofit providers across the City. The Cornerstone adult programs are designed to enhance skills and promote social interaction, community engagement, and physical activity.

Responsibilities
  • Assist Program Director or Program Coordinator with the development of program goals and activities for youth.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent credentials.
  • 3 Months to one-year experience working with youth in a recreational, educational and/or social environment.
  • Clearance through New York State Central Registry and New York State Office of Children and Family Services required.
  • Experience with or knowledge of best practices in youth development preferred.
  • Experience with or knowledge of whole language philosophy preferred.
  • Ability to establish rapport with young people.
  • Engaging personality and detailed orientated skills are essential.
  • Strong oral and written communication, time management and organizational skills are necessary.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and other standard business technology is required.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to use a computer for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, or sit for long periods of time.
  • Ability to climb five flights of stairs, if required to conduct home visits and/or fieldwork.
  • Ability to bend and retrieve objects and/or documents.
  • Ability to travel in the boroughs of New York City and its adjacent counties via public transportation.
  • Ability to travel for a minimum of 1 mile within a reasonable amount of time and in all types of weather, including inclement weather, if required to conduct home visits and/or field work.
