Position Title: Program Facilitator - YTOP (Youth Training and Opportunity Program)

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Reports To: Program Manager - YTOP (Youth Training and Opportunity Program)

Supervises: YTOP Interns

SUMMARY

Appetite For Change (AFC) is a nonprofit social enterprise in North Minneapolis whose mission is to use food as a tool to build health, wealth, and social change. AFC envisions sustainable, equitable, local food systems, created, and led by thriving, socially connected families and communities.

We are seeking a Program Facilitator to work in the Youth Training and Opportunity Program (YTOP). The YTOP Facilitator recruits and mentors YTOP Interns and facilitates and implements the program. The YTOP Facilitator serves as an ambassador for AFC within the greater community.

This is a full-time position, primarily working Monday through Friday, with some weekends based on need. This person works an average of 40 hours per week at the height of the program season (May to September in a given year), with the possibility of reducing to 20-30 hours per week in the offseason, depending on the availability of hours. The work is in-person and takes place during the day with occasional evening and weekend hours.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Supervise and mentor youth participants at assigned AFC projects/partnerships including Community Cooks, Urban Agriculture, community organizing, youth training sessions, and other AFC or partner-led events
    • Build strong, healthy relationships with participants while maintaining professional boundaries
    • Lead in the delivery of quality programming and workshops that meet the goals of AFC and contracted partners
    • Supervise youth staff during events and programming, offsite events and on-the-job training site
    • Community Cooks Workshops event preparation -Ensure that all materials, information are present in advance of events, communicate with participants and otherprogram staff before and during the event
    • Lead Community Cooks Meal Box packing work, facilitating activities for youth and delivering quality experience
    • Assist with facilitating and instructing Urban Ag job training for youth - oversee the spring-fall program and coordinate training schedule and activities to match the growth season; Create the youth work schedule
    • Educate the community about AFC’s work and promote involvement
    • Transport youth to offsite events and on-the-job training shifts, as needed
  2. Program Specialty: Youth Recruitment and Success
    • Recruit YTOP participants on an on-going basis
    • Support the Bring-A-Friend model
    • Work with local agencies/partner organizations to identify potential YTOP participants
    • Reach out to prospective participants, explain our services, describe the program, send applications, and set up interviews
    • Conduct interviews partnering with a member of management
    • Select Interns (with management) and notify selected individuals of hiring decision
    • Recruit other youth to participate in other programs, as needed -For example: Focus groups, workshops
    • Manage data around YTOP participants enrolled in the program; enter timesheets for enrolled youth into tracking system
    • Input and analyze program impact data regularly to evaluate the effectiveness of particular curriculum and overall program
  3. Program Specialty: Curriculum and Instruction
    • Assist with the Development of the overall curriculum for the YTOP program
    • Topics include: life skills, job readiness, urban agriculture, community organizing, cooking
    • Develop and update weekly lesson plans for each curriculum, in a consistent, detailed format allowing other facilitators to easily follow the lesson plan independently
    • Teach and coach other YTOP facilitators to conduct new and existing curriculum
    • Facilitate daily programming with youth
    • Oversee and evaluate student progress, intervening, mentoring, and coaching as appropriate
    • Educate others and adhere to all policies related to working and interacting with youth, such as: privacy, non-disclosure, professionalism, discrimination, harassment, etc.
  4. Program Specialty: Community Involvement and Engagement
    • Identify other organizations with similar goals for AFC to collaborate with
    • Coordinate activities and discussions with partner organizations to create momentum around policy-making and related initiatives
    • Build and manage relationships with community partners
    • Recruit YTOP and other youth program participants on an on-going basis
    • Promote YTOP activities throughout the community
    • Support AFC volunteering efforts
    • Coordinate and schedule community-affiliated events
    • Oversee on-site volunteers
    • Identify and attend community events to promote AFC’s services, restaurants, catering, trainee and employment opportunities at community events
    • Staff AFC events and fundraisers as requested

SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Other duties as assigned by management and as needed to support the effective implementation of programs

  2. Work closely with other program staff to ensure successful delivery of quality programming across the organization

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Desired Education and Experience

  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience co-creating learning environments with youth, and a demonstrated teaching style reflecting compassion, wisdom, integrity, critical thinking and emotional intelligence
  • Valid Minnesota Driver’s License, clean driving record and insurable
  • Experience working in North Minneapolis preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Able to oversee Youth Interns; set objectives and work goals and standards, give direction, delegate to, and motivate Interns;
  • Effective interpersonal, collaboration, and communication skills to effectively work with a diverse variety of people and personalities in and out of the organization
  • Strong written and oral communication skills to effectively communicate in an educational and influential manner; able to mentor and work cooperatively
  • Skilled at using Google Suite (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, etc.), internet-based research methods, and social media tools
  • Able to plan, prioritize, coordinate, and manage own work and work independently
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and applies effective time management skills to meet all deadlines
  • Able to learn new things and problem-solve creatively and as a team
  • Able to follow kitchen, farming, and other safety protocol closely and consistently

  • Strong passion for the work of Appetite For Change and serving the community; Understanding of and investment in deconstructing systems of oppression

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS NECESSARY TO PERFORM THIS JOB

Incumbent must be able to:

  • Hear and speak in order to use telephone and communicate with people inside and outside of AFC
  • Stand for extended periods of time (6 – 8 hours per day)
  • Sit at a desk, and use a computer mouse, keyboard, and monitor, for moderate periods of time (1 – 3 hours per day)
  • Perform physical activities for both gardening and cooking, including standing, walking, bending, twisting, kneeling, crouching, digging, planting, etc.
  • Have manual dexterity for keyboarding, using gardening hand tools, and using kitchen tools
  • Have hand and arm strength to perform gardening tasks and use kitchen equipment
  • Periodically lift and/or move objects weighing up to 35 pounds
  • Work in-person or remotely during the day and evenings and be flexible in scheduling as the program requires
  • Work some evenings and weekends to attend and/or facilitate AFC events and workshops
  • Independently get to worksites and travel between multiple sites across the community, including periodically drive program van to transport Intern team
  • Possess a current driver’s license, reliable transportation and valid insurance to travel around the Twin Cities

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The physical work environment consists of a variety of environments, to include:
  • Indoor work, including both office environments and kitchen/cooking environments, including high heat, cold areas, smoke, odors, cleaning chemicals, and other typical kitchen conditions
  • Outdoor - Farm sites, working in all weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow, etc.).
  • Applicants should expect an active work environment, setting up and cleaning the physical space and engaging directly with youth. Noise levels in the work environment are usually moderate to high.

PAY RATE:

$18 - $21 per hour - DOQ
