Job summary

Brown County Health and Human Services is seeking compassionate team members to support youth in the Shelter Care Unit. This role provides care and supervision for residents up to 18 youths aged 10–17, in a 24/7 setting, with overnight and weekend shifts.

Responsibilities include activity planning, rule enforcement, health and safety, documentation, and coordination with case managers. Prioritizes crisis de‑escalation, positive discipline, and collaboration with families and professionals.

• Attend staff development, seminars, meetings, and workshops.
• Maintain required training, hours, and certifications annually.

Job Overview

Position

The Shelter Care Unit is looking for compassionate, composed and resourceful individuals to join our team. The role provides care and supervision to residents (up to 18 males and females ages 10-17) placed at the Brown County Shelter Care through the Juvenile Court System. Shelter Care operates 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.

Shift Pattern

• Part‑time: Overnight shift (every‑other weekend) – Friday 11 pm to Saturday 7 am and Saturday 11 pm to Sunday 7 am.
• Part‑time: Day shift (every‑other weekend) – Saturday and Sunday 7 am to 3 pm.
• On‑call: Open shifts as available.
• Shift differentials: $0.50 per hour from 4 pm to 10 pm, $1.25 per hour from 10 pm to 6 am, and $0.50 for all weekend hours.

Essential Duties

• Assist in planning, directing, and overseeing learning, living, and leisure activities through direct interaction with youth at the shelter.
• Enforce shelter rules, intervene in crisis situations, and monitor the location and activities of children 24 hours per day.
• Assure health, safety, and well‑being of residents.
• Maintain positive relationships and provide support, encouragement, and information to youth and their families.

• Participate in planning and executing learning, recreational, social, and daily living skills programs.
• Administer positive discipline without the use of physical or mechanical restraint.
• Communicate effectively with parents, case managers, court staff, coworkers and community professionals.
• Plan, develop, participate in, and supervise community outings and presentations for residents.
• Complete statistical and progress reports on youth or agency activities.
• Perform general duties such as inventory maintenance, room cleaning, purchasing of supplies, first aid/CPR/AED administration, and housekeeping.
• Conduct fire drills and carry out emergency/safety plans.
• Assist in planning the nutritional meal program and participate in food preparation, storage, and cleanup.
• Attend staff development, seminars, meetings, and workshops.
• Maintain required training, hours, and certifications annually.
• Execute shelter care work rules, policies, and procedures, and all county policies.

Physical Demands

Requires lifting up to 30 pounds, frequent lifting or carrying of objects up to 20 pounds, standing, walking, and sitting for extended periods, occasional driving, and repetitive hand or foot movements. Requires frequent bending, twisting, squatting, and reaching. Verbal communication in a clear manner is required.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
• Knowledge of appropriate educational, recreational, and social activities for youth and the ability to carry them out effectively and instructionally.
• Knowledge of group dynamics and human relations.
• Knowledge of health and safety precautions and first aid, CPR, AED.
• Knowledge of acceptable hygiene standards, procedures regarding blood‑borne pathogens, and appropriate food handling, preparation and storage.
• Knowledge of adolescent psychology, human growth, and development.
• Ability to help youth acquire daily living/social skills.
• Ability to use crisis intervention and de‑escalation skills.
• Ability to relate with young people in a positive, respectful, responsible, unprejudiced, and understanding manner using sound judgment.
• Ability to maintain a positive and effective working relationship with internal customers (case managers, parents, human service workers) and external customers (law enforcement, service providers, guardians, general public).
• Ability to provide safe, beneficial care and services to youth.
• Ability to prioritize multiple duties and responsibilities under changing circumstances.
• Ability to exercise mature judgment at all times.
• Ability to enforce rules and regulations as established in shelter care policy and state licensing requirements.
