POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Sports Director and in accordance with the Christian mission and purpose of the Great Miami Valley YMCA Association, the Youth Sports Official I is responsible for officiating excellent and safe youth programs for YMCA members and program participants in sports programs.

Essential Functions

  • Monitors play to oversee the safety of players and ensure the sport and YMCA rules are followed.
  • Ensures the gym(s) are ready for games with physical setting and equipment.
  • Communicates and enforces sports rules effectively while providing leadership during all games according to the YMCA policy.
  • Maintains cleanliness of the gym area.
  • Sets up and tear down all equipment needed for play prior to start up time.
  • Builds relationships with members and program participants.
  • Ensures safety by communicating and enforcing any rules, policies, and guidelines at participants’ comprehension level.
  • Ensures safety by checking for hazardous conditions and making sure all safety equipment is properly placed and in proper working condition.
  • Follows all sports program rules, dress code, policies, and guidelines.
  • Creates an atmosphere based on fair play and incorporates it in a demonstrative and professional manner.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be at least 14 years of age or older.
  • Must have a willingness to complete: Child Abuse Prevention training, Basic Life Support; First Aid; and New Staff Orientation.
  • Completion of YMCA program-specific certifications.
  • Six months or more of related sports and/or officiating experience preferred.
  • Must have reliable transportation.


WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.
  • Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.
  • Must be able to lift and/or assist children up to 50 pounds in weight.
  • Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.
  • Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate.
  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency.
  • Assist with implementing rules and regulations of all youth sports programs.
