Job description

The City of Bellevue is seeking positive, energetic individuals to work in a variety of sports and recreation camps with youth ages 7-13. Counselors will be responsible for supervising and leading children through day camp activities such as games, sports, water activities, and field trips while providing a safe and inclusive environment for all. Experience working with sports & recreation programs and diverse elementary and middle school aged youth is desired.

Full-time counselors will work between 20-40 hours pers week in the summer. Hours can vary between 7:30am to 6pm. There is the opportunity to work a full day or half day (morning or afternoon) shift and shifts will rotate weekly. Youth Sports is also seeking substitute counselors for our 2025 summer camps. Substitute counselors work variable hours depending on shift coverage needs. If interested in continuing beyond the summer, work hours through the school year range from 2-10 hours per week (afternoons, evenings, occasional weekends).

Summer Camp dates are June 30-July 3, July 7-11, July 14-18, July 21-25, July 28-August 1, August 4-8, and August 11-15. Main summer camp location will be Tyee Middle School, 13630 SE Allen Rd, Bellevue, WA 98006. Counselors will also need to attend approximately two (2) days of training during the week of June 23 rd. This will include First Aid/CPR training.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • A demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning of diversity, equity & inclusion principles and a commitment to implement these principles in your work.
  • General knowledge of specific sports fundamentals and games (soccer, flag football, basketball, baseball, kickball, tag, capture the flag, etc.).
  • Experience working with youth and teenage participants.

  • Willingness to participate in all program related activities.
  • Assist with program preparation, setup and take down.

  • Work will be performed primarily outdoors, at least 70% of the time (dependent on season).

Seasonal Employee Definition

  • Must be pre-approved by Human Resources to ensure compliance with the legislation

  • Regularly scheduled to work up to 40 hours per week for which the customary annual employment is six months or less

  • Customary means that the nature of the position typically lasts for six months or fewer and that the period of employment begins at approximately the same time each year

  • NOTE: Will be considered full-time and eligible for medical coverage if hours average 30 hours per week or more over a 12-month measurement period (or 130 hours per month)
