Job summary

Child & Family Service (CFS) in Ewa Beach, Hawaii seeks a Youth Mentor for the Positive Pathways program (8 hours/week). Under supervision of the Program Supervisor, the mentor supports the Case Manager in delivering services to youth at risk of substance use or other life challenges.

The role emphasizes guidance, positive role modeling, resilience-building, and helping youth set academic and recovery goals through consistent engagement and safe, supportive relationships.

Qualifications

SUMMARY OF DUTIES

The Positive Pathways Youth Mentoring Program Mentor works under the supervision of the Program Supervisor and supports the Case Manager in delivering services to youth. This role provides guidance, encouragement, and positive role modeling to young people who are at risk of, or recovering from, substance use, involvement with the juvenile justice system, or other life challenges.

Mentors play a vital role in helping participants build resilience, strengthen social and emotional skills, and achieve personal, academic, and recovery-related goals. Through supportive relationships and consistent engagement, mentors foster a safe, positive environment that promotes growth, accountability, confidence, and self-sufficiency.

This position includes community-based mentoring activities, school visits, and office-based sessions. Flexibility is required, as some evening and weekend hours may be necessary to meet the needs of youth and their families.

Ideal candidates are passionate about empowering youth, possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, and are committed to making a positive impact in the lives of young people and their communities.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

• Up to and including high school. Requires enough basic education to understand and follow standard practice or oral and written instructions, able to read and write, use simple arithmetic, keep simple records, or use simple office machines such as copier and data entry/computer skills

EXPERIENCE

• Over six months, up to and including one year.

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

• Demonstrates integrity, accountability, and healthy lifestyle choices.
• Ability to understand and respond to youth with compassion and without judgment.
• Skill in forming positive, consistent, and supportive relationships with youth who may have experienced trauma or instability.
• Consistent presence and commitment to meeting regularly with mentees, even during setbacks.
• Ability to calmly and constructively address disagreements or emotional outbursts.
• Basic knowledge of risk factors, triggers, and the recovery process for youth affected by opioid or substance use.
• Awareness of how trauma affects behavior and learning, and how to respond with sensitivity.
• Understanding and respect for Hawaii’s diverse communities, including Native Hawaiian values
• Knowledge of basic recordkeeping—session notes, attendance, and goal tracking

OTHER POSITION REQUIREMENTS

• This job requires a valid Hawaii driver's license and a clear driver's abstract and continued employment may be contingent on maintaining a clear driver’s abstract.
• This job requires a valid Hawaii driver's license, a clear driver's abstract, and use of agency vehicle to transport participants, as needed, as well as a willingness to travel in personal vehicle on an as-needed basis throughout the island
• This position is subject to a criminal background investigation, and continued employment is contingent on a record clear of convictions
• Continued employment in this position is contingent on successful completion of CPI classes OR other Behavioral Management certification as may be contract mandated.
