The Salvation Army in Houston is seeking a Casual Youth Recreation Assistant to support youth-focused activities at TX-Houston International Corps. The role involves helping with registration, orientation, and day-to-day supervision of youth participants.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Prepare Youth for Success: foster an environment for youth development and promote participation; assist with member registration and orientation; provide guidance to members.
  • Program Development and Implementation: administer programs and activities; oversee special programs; monitor quality and safety; assist outreach to grow participation.
  • Driver Role: safely transport Center members and staff; ensure safety and proper reporting of vehicle maintenance; communicate courteously with parents and staff.
  • Facility & Equipment Management: help maintain facilities and storage areas; report repairs and janitorial needs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare Youth for Success (20%)
    • Creates an environment that facilitates the achievement of Youth Development Outcomes:
    • Promotes and stimulates program participation.
    • Assists with registration of new members and participates in their Centers orientation process.
    • Provides guidance and role modeling to members.
  • Program Development and Implementation (50%)
    • Implements and administers programs, services and activities for Centers members in an effective manner. May oversee special programs and services such as Youth of Year programs or Youth of the Month.
    • Monitors and evaluates programs, services, and activities to ensure safety of members, quality in programs and appearance of the branch at all times. Prepare periodic activity reports.
    • Assists with implementation of outreach efforts to sustain and increase program membership and program participation.
  • Driver Role (20%)
    • The Driver is responsible for safely transporting Centers members and staff to or from school, activities or programs as approved by the Site Director and is responsible for the proper reporting of maintenance, cleanliness, and safety needs of the assigned vehicle.
    • Safely operate Centers member transportation in accordance with state and The Salvation Army rules and regulations. Ensure safety of children within Driver’s direct care. Supervises behavior of passengers and manages passenger behavior in a manner that ensures safety and compliance with behavioral standards during transport.
    • Communicates with parents, students, and staff in a courteous and respectful manner; respond accordingly to needs.
    • Follows all Centers policies and state regulations. Ensures transportation list is on bus and accounts for all children before and after departure. Ensures and double checks that all children have exited vehicle at destinations.
  • Facility & Equipment Management (10%)
    • Assists in maintaining facility and equipment in good working order. Assists in maintaining all storage areas keeping them orderly and clean. Reports all repairs, maintenance, and janitorial needs to supervisor.
Physical Requirements

Ability to deal comfortably with stressful situations and follow emergency procedures.

Ability to multi-task, ability to follow instructions and complete tasks in a safe and effective manners. Ability to interact with co-workers and the public in a positive, professional manner.

Ability to meet attendance requirements.

Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language effectively. Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing.

Ability to work under the pressure of deadlines and time constraints. Ability to meet attendance requirements.

Duties are usually performed by combinations of sitting, standing and walking on a frequent change basis.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an indoor and outdoor recreational environment where there may be physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt and the like.

What We Are Looking For In You
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. AND previous work in related field with Children and Youth preferred
Licenses & Certifications

Must possess a valid driver’s license and a clear driving record. If required, may have to possess a CDL level license
