Job summary

Salvation Army Houston Northwest Corps is seeking a part-time Youth Programs Assistant to plan and supervise activities for Center members, and to assist in program development and outreach.

Responsibilities include preparing youth for success, coordinating activities, and safely transporting members as needed. A High School Diploma or GED and a valid driver’s license are required; prior youth work is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Prepare Youth for Success: create an environment that facilitates youth development outcomes and promote program participation.
  • Program Development and Implementation: administer programs, monitor safety, and prepare activity reports.
  • Driver Role: transport centers members and staff safely; ensure vehicle safety and communicate with parents and staff.
  • Facility & Equipment Management: help maintain facilities and report repairs and janitorial needs.

Schedule/Hours: M - F 1:00 pm - 6:00 pm (25 hours per week)

Plans, implements, supervises members and evaluates activities provided within a specific program area, supporting the Red Shield Youth Centers priority outcome areas of Academic Success, Healthy Lifestyles, Good Character and Citizenship. May oversee special programs and/or events (i.e. Keystone, Youth of the Year and Awards Programs), and/or participate in the implementation of other unit activities as necessary. In absence of the Program Coordinator; may provide supervision oversight to other Youth Development Professionals to ensure continuity of program services at unit/branch locations. Builds and maintains a professional relationship with all Centers members and their families in order to help advance the mission of The Salvation Army.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare Youth for Success (20%)
    • Creates an environment that facilitates the achievement of Youth Development Outcomes:
    • Promotes and stimulates program participation.
    • Assists with registration of new members and participates in their Centers orientation process.
    • Provides guidance and role modeling to members.
  • Program Development and Implementation (50%)
    • Implements and administers programs, services and activities for Centers members in an effective manner. May oversee special programs and services such as Youth of Year programs or Youth of the Month.
    • Monitors and evaluates programs, services, and activities to ensure safety of members, quality in programs and appearance of the branch at all times. Prepare periodic activity reports.
    • Assists with implementation of outreach efforts to sustain and increase program membership and program participation.
  • Driver Role (20%)
    • The Driver is responsible for safely transporting Centers members and staff to or from school, activities or programs as approved by the Site Director and is responsible for the proper reporting of maintenance, cleanliness, and safety needs of the assigned vehicle.
    • Safely operate Centers member transportation in accordance with state and The Salvation Army rules and regulations. Ensure safety of children within Driver’s direct care. Supervises behavior of passengers and manages passenger behavior in a manner that ensures safety and compliance with behavioral standards during transport. Communicates with parents, students, and staff in a courteous and respectful manner; respond accordingly to needs.
    • Follows all Centers policies and state regulations. Ensures transportation list is on bus and accounts for all children before and after departure. Ensures and double checks that all children have exited vehicle at destinations.
  • Facility & Equipment Management (10%)
    • Assists in maintaining facility and equipment in good working order. Assists in maintaining all storage areas keeping them orderly and clean. Reports all repairs, maintenance, and janitorial needs to supervisor.

  • Ability to deal comfortably with stressful situations and follow emergency procedures.
  • Ability to multi-task, ability to follow instructions and complete tasks in a safe and effective manners. Ability to interact with co-workers and the public in a positive, professional manner.
  • Ability to meet attendance requirements.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language effectively. Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work under the pressure of deadlines and time constraints. Ability to meet attendance requirements.
  • Duties are usually performed by combinations of sitting, standing and walking on a frequent change basis.
Working Conditions
  • Work is performed in an indoor and outdoor recreational environment where there may be physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt and the like.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR IN YOUEducation and Experience
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. AND previous work in related field with Children and Youth preferred
Licenses & Certifications
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and a clear driving record. If required, may have to possess a CDL level license.
