Youth Development Counselor (Thursday – Sunday)

Full Time – Wading River, NY, US.

Availability: Full‑time positions for Thursday & Friday 2 pm to 11 pm, Saturday & Sunday 12 pm to 11 pm.

Responsibilities

• Supervise the activities of children residing in the cottage and ensure that rules and procedures are followed.
• Assist in organizing, supervising, and participating in recreational and other group activities, which may involve driving clients, depending on the shift assignment.
• Instruct children on personal hygiene and supervise and participate in maintaining the cleanliness of the cottage.
• Prepare and supervise meals and assist in the housekeeping of the residence, depending on the shift assignment.
• Enter information concerning the activity of residents during the shift into the Cottage Log and prepare incident reports as required.
• Have some knowledge of methods and techniques for dealing with adolescent behavior, group leadership, and appropriate disciplinary procedures.

Qualifications

• Ability to gain and hold the confidence of children and maintain a sympathetic and understanding attitude toward them.
• Ability to understand and follow laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to the care and safety of children under care.
• Ability to keep routine records and to make oral and written reports.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Thorough knowledge of appropriate restraint techniques.
• Valid NYS driver’s license.
• High School Diploma or GED.
• Experience in handling groups of children & teens, preferably in a residential setting.
• Ability to participate in mandated initial TCI training during weekday evenings upon hire.
• Fluent English reading, writing, speaking, and computer skills necessary to record observations and monitor reports.

Compensation

Starting at $18.00 /hour. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
