Description

The Youth Counselor works as scheduled in Healing Homes, providing supervision, support, and direction to children fostering their positive growth and development. Responsibilities include maintaining a hazard-free, clean, and orderly household; preparing meals according to menus; completing logs, forms, and reports; participating in scheduled meetings; and accompanying children for outside activities or appointments.

Primary Responsibilities and Essential Functions
  • Provide a warm, homelike atmosphere by establishing individual relationships with residents, focusing on their positive growth and development.
  • Offer individualized care and supervision of each resident.
  • Ensure an orderly schedule for residents, supervising daily activities such as wake-up, school or program attendance, mealtime, study time, chores, and bedtime; monitor appointments for punctuality.
  • Monitor residents' physical well-being, ensuring proper clothing, adequate food, and medical treatments, including medication dispensing.
  • Communicate and enforce household rules; apply discipline fairly and objectively.
  • Transport children to outside activities and appointments as required.
  • Maintain household cleanliness and safety, report maintenance issues promptly, and complete chores efficiently.
  • Prepare meals and snacks as assigned, manage petty cash, and complete all required paperwork.
  • Participate in meetings, carry out treatment and permanency plans, and provide transportation and supervision for activities.
  • Organize and facilitate independent living skills groups, support development, and participate in service planning.
  • Deliver trauma-sensitive services, provide counseling, support, crisis intervention, and behavior management.
  • Complete documentation timely, assist with household duties, and fulfill tasks assigned by the supervisor.
Additional Skills, Abilities, and Characteristics
  • Adhere to all agency policies and procedures.
  • Maintain emotional stability and authority, serve as a positive role model.
  • Be open to trauma-informed training and maintain a trauma-sensitive environment.
  • Develop and maintain appropriate boundaries, demonstrate sensitivity to crisis needs, and respect cultural differences.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid NYS driver's license.
  • Flexibility to work any 10-hour shift required by the program.
  • Obtain S95 & F-07 fire safety certification within 3 months.
  • At least 1 year of professional childcare experience, preferably with youth with serious emotional disturbances.
  • Experience with diverse communities and multicultural issues.
  • Skills in cooking, household maintenance, interpersonal communication, physical stamina, and adaptability to individual needs.
